It was short and hard that means That she's had the darn hair in too long.I've never had a weave but it was dull and looked dirty too.

It's like this....if someone is a model or an actress, the CLIENT tells you how they want you to wear your hair. They are paying her BIG bucks so you better believe they can tell her how to wear her hair. So Tyra can be booked for a fashion show or a TV commercial or photo shoot and if the client wants her hair long down the miggle of her back, that is how she has to wear it. End of story. Now here is where I have an axe to grind. Are Black people calling or writing to sponsors, TV producers, movie producers, magazine editors, and fashion show producers to complain that the Black models and actresses they are using are wearing weaves, straightening their hair, or tinting their hair blonde? Are Black people writing to these individuals and demanding to see natural hair styles? NO!! IN fact blugiant have YOU ever written to or called a sponsor, TV producer, movie producer, magazine editor, or fashion show producer to express your concerns? If you haven't then you have NO right to complain about how Black actresses or models wear their hair.

Why should Tyra or ANY model or actress take a stand on this hair issue and STARVE when the members of her community aren't going to back her up? The loss of opportunity and income simply ain't worth it.

Blugiant, btw, this is coming fron a CONSCIOUS Black woman who didn't straighten her hair over 20 years. There are relatively few women of African descent in the Western world who can match MY track record on THIS issue. If you think Black women in corporate jobs face any LESS pressure to conform when it comes to hair...think again. I KNOW of what I speak. (I have already done a thread about this and I think it is still in style and fashion.)

BTW, a couple of days ago. I ran into that Black male on camera host who took a stand about this hair issue. He has faced trememdous pressure but he wears his hair as he feels like wearing it sometimes in twists, sometimes in locks and sometimes in braids. This took great courage as the female newsreaders weren't and aren't even permitted to wear the wash and wear look on camera. They are COMPELLED to straighten their hair and the look that is demanded is sleek and straight.

Now how many Canadian boardites have picked up the phone or a pen and contacted the station to back up this man for his stand and indictate that it is refreshing to see a man with an Afrocentric look on the air?

Have YOU ever written to or called a sponsor, TV producer, movie producer, magazine editor, or fashion show producer to express your concerns? If you haven't then you have NO right to complain about how Black actresses or models wear their hair. Why knock the people who earn their livlihood in the fashion and entertainment industry when we contine to buy products from the very advertizers who at best force models to look more WHITE to appear in their ads or refuse to hire them PERIOD. There is a particular hair care line that NEVER uses Black women in their advertising. All you can see is White women and a lot of blondes flinging their hair all over the place night after night. Yet, a number of the female boardites have mentionned they buy products from this company.

If members of the Black community, including you blugiant, can't be bother to put your money where you mouth is, why should Tyra or ANY model or actress blow their career because of the hair issue and STARVE? The loss of opportunity and income simply ain't worth it.

I produce fashion shows.

I prefer my models to be as natural as possible and in general frown on usage of wigs, flase hair, false nails, implants and what have you. Of course it depends on the thematics of the show- sometimes wigs are a part of the costume for a design reason, and I wouldn't just dismiss a model because she had breast implants...I just like people who have a sense of natural style as I find it refreshing and a lot sexier.

People lack confidence in nature's gifts, for me it is easy to recognize the corporate mind job perpetrated against most women, be they black, asian, white, brown...so I don't find it surprising.

As to whether or not Tyra should wear her hair the way she does, many models have riders to their contracts or stipulations...I can understand people subjugating their principles if they are just starting out in the game, but she is a huge personality now.

The simple truth is maybe she likes the look. I don't think you can really argue about how someone wants to perceive themselves after a certain point. Should she comb her hair? Should she wear makeup? These are all choices she makes and they have reasons- she wear makeup because she thinks she needs to enhance the looks of her face, but it is an artificial mentality that her regular face is not good enough. The truth is we all do things to make ourselves look more attractive, and there is little difference (to me) between waking up in the morning and combing or brushing your hair, or choosing to put on a crazy wig, hat, lipstick, or certain pair of jeans. At a certain level they are just accessories- of course with some people you also have to accept that there is a definite psychology at work as far as the choices they make and where and how they draw the line.

Rudemonk, glad to meet a fashion show producer who has sense when it comes to this issue. Unfortunately, you aren't typical. BTW, I don't buy the fact that you would no a regular basis use models who refused to wear makeup. I have NEVER seen that unless it's a really edgey show and those are rare.

Look at some of the art work in editorial campaigns. I remember a billboard that was right downtown in Toronto. Can't recall the product but it was a drawing depicting a Black woman and a White woman. The White woman had short hair and the Black woman had hair, clear down her back to her waist. This is the mentality of some of the people who draw the story boards for ad campaigns.

Also, it doesn't matter how well established one is, "he who pays the piper plays the tune". I remember a certain light skinned Black model based here in Toronto was VERY popular and constantly booked. In other words, WELL established. She used to wear her hair in a pony tail sometimes for a smooth sleek look. She got tired of all the upkeep of her long hair that was below her shoulder blades so she had the hairdresser cut it. There was a certain client who used to book her and fly her down to the states on a regular basis. When she turned up with her hair cut, they refused to use her. She was shipped back to Canada the same day. This was a little bizarre as the hair was the same length as when it was pulled back in a ponytail. She found a DRAMATIC drop in her bookings and she had no option but to get a weave until her hair grew back.

Earlier this year in Toronto, a Black model was cast for a TV commercial. When she turned up for the wardrobe call, she was told in NO UNCERTAIN TERMS that her hair had to be smooth and sleek for the shoot. Meanwhile, a white model in the same commercial was allowed to have long, frizzy hair. So, I guess some folks on here feel the Black model should have refused to straighten her hair and walk away from the gig. Quick question, blugiant, would any of you have helped her pay her rent or buy groceries if she turnded down this and other bookings with clients who made similar demands?

The Black female news readers who turned up with wash and wear looks were told straighten it or be fired.

So, folks need to stop blaming the victim until they are prepared to take some concrete steps to influence producers.

well it is fashion and people are pretty fickle about it. the story of the model who cut her hair doesn't surprise me at all- it all depends on "the look" and if you are booking a model for their look, and they change it, and you don't know that, it can cause problems. I mean, I don't know the details, I'm just saying...film and tv actors have the same thing, which is why they get booked to do certain roles and why some get typecast. It sounds like your model got typecast as having a particular look that people were booking her for.

Most models are booked from either in person go-sees, previous work, look books, look cards, agents...it's like buying sight unseen, in a way. If you make a purchase on the internet, let's say, and you buy a car with leather seats, and the car comes and it has vinyl seats...you might have a problem. She might have showed up and taken the producers by surprise with her short hair.

If a girl shows up and she is no longer representative of the look she was advertising, or that people had come to know her by, it can be a problem. The booking agent should be aware of any current style changes that might effect the show. I remember this one girl, a stunning chinese girl, who I would use all the time even though technically she was a little "short." She had a fantastic figure and a great personality that translated really well. Well, it had been a few months since I had last booked her and I had a show coming up in a nightclub. When she came in for the fittings she had these huge Koi tattoos all up and down her back and arms. Some people didn't want to use her anymore after that, the statement that her look was now making changed.

Luckily I really liked her, thought this made her more edgy, and had directions I could go with her.

That model who cut her hair just needs a better agent as short haired girls are in just as much demand as long haired...unless she just had particularly stunning hair.

You are right about makeup, but that is sort of what I was saying, at a certain point, all this stuff is just external trappings- what is really the difference between putting on a wig, or putting on lipstick, or a man shaving his face clean...

From my standpoint I think education and exposure are the tools required to change the norms we are dealing with, and the conformity problems we face as individuals who are not cookie cutter. Norms affect people in different ways, race and sex are two obvious ones.

The power of the consumers' voice should not be underestimated. The reality is that consumers have producers by the balls if they so choose, which is a shift I'd like to see happen as I am tired of seeing images of conformity spoonfed to us and swallowed, hook, line, and sinker.
