....that if you're shipping stuff to Jamaica WRT Hurricane Relief, if you package your shipment (according to guidelines) and provide a shipping list to your High Commission / Consulate they may be able to 'clear' the shipment so it will NOT be subject to duty when it lands!
What if you are shipping things to individual people that you want to help. I have asked for donations at work and have about 200+ pounds of canned goods sitting in my office. The owners of the company has agreed to pay shipping (and that's big sum right there) so I don't want to have to ask them to help me on customs fees.
I know I can send this to various relief organazations but I am trying to get this to specific people that I know really need it.
Check with the closest Jamaican Consulate or High Commission in your area... certain items are 'allowed' others not - and you'll need to prepare a shipping list for the Consulate (who will acknowledge it with the Customs people home).
For example: I got the impression that if your were sending a variety of things in different 'boxes'... each box would need to be clearly identified and a shipping document outlining the specifics
I also got the impression the boxes could not hold an assortment of all the above. You may have to designate someone to receive and dispense according to your personal directions.
I'm meeting at our local Embassy here tomorrow -will try find out more complete info / guidelines.
