Is God sexless?

I've often pondered on the sexuality of God. In most of our teachings/preachings from childhood, the deity has always been presented as MALE and seems to be accepted without question by the naive and the faithful.

As a young man who began to look at life and the world more analytically, I began to ask questions and search for answers, but sadly none were forthcomming to satisfy my insatiable appetite to learn and understand what was or what is, as it relates to religion and the deity. I must admit that during that period of my life I became an AGNOSTIC, although I was grounded in the church (Baptist) in my earlier years. There were just too many unanswered questions.

To my way of thinking, The idea of God being a man instead of a woman, seems to come from the fact that early history, including religious history, was documented by men in what we know was primarily patriarchal societies. It may very well be that GOD is indeed a woman!!.... but can you imagine telling that to a fundamentalist christian or islamic faithful? What do you all think?

God is a spirit;leave it at that.If he ever came to the earth as a human he would come in the form of a man just as his son Jesus did.Remember,HIS son calls him 'FATHER'.

As far as I know, the JudeoChristian God is male. I hear there are early texts that described a dual male/female nature for God, but that it was cut out, and God is for all intents and purposes male - in gender reference and also in character, it seems. Not a very female-like figure.

Which god? Plenty of gods that people believe in are very sexy. History has many fertility gods, like the Greeks, and Hindu. And wasn't a big part of the early Jewish history a battle between their one god and the sex cults of the times?

Yes! Yes! 40leGz, ....I do know of these other gods, but being a former baptist, I was mainly referring to the Christian God. I asume the the Hebrew God to be the same.

Oh, that god is a he. I've never once heard of the Jewish Jehovah referred to as a she.

Well, there'd be no references to a 'god the father' unless said deity was male. The mother of a friend of mine attended a church which referred to 'father-mother god', which gave rise to thoughts regarding the placement of the sacred lingam and yoni.

It doesn't matter much does it? It doesn't seem to detract from the fundamental characteristic of Yahweh as Creator and Maker of all things...good and bad.

You , like me, was fed on the milk of anthropomorphism and Judaic male chauvinism.

Christ claimed that God is a spirit. Apparently, it never occurred to the Apostles to ask Christ if God was male or female, they being male chauvinistic Jews. He would probably have circumvented the question, as he did when one of the Apostles asked him to show them how The Father looked ,or words to that effect. If we accept that God is omnipotent, then it logically follows that he ought to possess the power to transform into anything He wished to be- spirit, plant, animal , wind , rain or fire or a Rastaman.

Seriously, now that you mention it, I remember growing up hearing on the one hand that nobody knows what God looks like, which certainly helps one deal with the concept that we were all created in his image (he looks like no-one and looks like everyone).

Then on the other hand, dem pictras of the long hair bearded blue-eyed Jesus, son of God and God himself. Not to mention the Sistine Chapel God arm - masculine and white.

I usually think of God as female - CREATOR is defdinitely a female role. I realize the bible refers to God as He and Father and all that but I think that's because the men who wrote the bible were mainly jealous of the power women have to give birth [img]/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

{Fledgist: Divine father + divine mother tends to involve the sacred items mentioned. Certainly, in terms of orthodox (not to mention Orthodox) Christian theology, the concept of a 'father-mother god' is unacceptable.}

I just this morning saw a Brueghel 'Holy Family' in which the said family looked exceedingly northern European. The baby Jesus was quite pink.

The portrait of god in the Sistine Chapel is of a mature and vigorous white male, with white hair and beard. Is nat jis di han.
