Baptism

Good morning all.

Being fairly new to this site I'm sure that this topic has already been discussed. I was reading another post and something came to my mind and I thought I would ask it here. What is baptism? How is it to be done? Is it a necessary part of salvation?

{If possible, please provide scripture along with your reasoning}

What type of baptism are you speaking of specifically? Baptism of infants and children or adult baptism? Water baptism, or baptism of the Holy Ghost? Please clarify.

I'm baptised....don't believe in "baby baptisms"...but trying to get everyone else's views on the subject (mainly adult water baptism)

Anyhow mi nuh believe seh God would give de power to some man in sum kinda cloth an no he shouldn't be naked to baptise ppl and have it hold so much power.
There is a big myth with people of African decent that if you're not baptise you'll be in BIG trouble at death. I for one am not buying it. probably came from slavery days too anyway
Alot of the stuff we believe in should be looked at with a fine tooth comb to find ou who taught us this.
And if it's a teaching that came from slave masters I want nothing to do with it. Dem ting deh need fe bunn.
God is to do the baptising.
What is better for you to be baptised in flesh or in spirit?
When we leave here the flesh stays here so what good is it.

Not sure which baptism you are referring to but just to add this to the 'pot' before it get stirred up (which I believe is the purpose of this post), Greek lexicon on water baptism and related scriptures.

1) immersion, submersion

1a) of calamities and afflictions with which one is quite overwhelmed

1b) of John's baptism, that purification rite by which men on confessing their sins were bound to spiritual reformation, obtained the pardon of their past sins and became qualified for the benefits of the Messiah's kingdom soon to be set up.
This was valid Christian baptism, as this was the only baptism the apostles received and it is not recorded anywhere that they were ever rebaptised after Pentecost.

1c) of Christian baptism; a rite of immersion in water as commanded by Christ, by which one after confessing his sins and professing his faith in Christ, having been born again by the Holy Spirit unto a new life, identifies publicly with the fellowship of Christ and the church.

In Rom. 6:3 Paul states we are "baptised unto death" meaning that we are not only dead to our former ways, but they are buried.

To return to them is as unthinkable for a Christian as for one to dig up a dead corpse!

Mark 11:30 The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men? answer me.

Romans 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

Ephesians 4:5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism,

1Peter 3:21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:

dahah you and me part pon this one. baptism is like an initiation. seen? [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]

people of African decent used to them initiations, so no wonder the only kind of initiation there for them to grab after slavery is baptism. mind and body have to be baptised*. baptism is like them ritual baths.

Matthew 28:18-19 says

And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

Again, Acts 2:38 says: Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

By these 2 scriptures therefore seem to suggest, that repentance, water baptism (immersion) as well as baptism of the Holy Ghost are needed in order for one to gain everlasting life.

Why then is it that in the Christian arena, there is conflict about "how" one is baptised? By that I mean some state that the "right" way is "...in the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost..." while others state that the "right" way is "...in Jesus' name". Aren't they one and the same? Why then is there conflict?
