The US requires Canadian Landed immigrants from the Commonwealth countries to possess a visa to cross the border after March 17, 2003. The visa costs US$100

"Canadian landed immigrants will need U.S. visas starting March 17
Effective March 17, 2003, Canadian landed immigrants from British Commonwealth countries and Ireland will no longer be exempt from U.S. visa requirements.

Previously, Canadian landed immigrants from Commonwealth countries, including India and Pakistan, were treated the same way as Canadian citizens. They did not need visa stamps in their passports to enter the U.S., with the exception of K (fiancée) and E (traders and investors) nonimmigrants.

Beginning March 17, landed immigrants will be treated the same way as any other citizen of the country they are from. Landed immigrants from India, for instance, will be subject to the same visa requirements as all other Indian citizens. This means a visa will be required for all categories of nonimmigrants, including visitors (B visas) and H-1B workers.

There is no change for Canadian citizens. Canadian citizens will not need visas to enter the U.S., except in the K and E categories. Of course, Canadians will need to meet all other entry requirements. For instance, a Canadian seeking to work in H-1B status will still need an approved petition. It is only the visa stamp in the passport that is not required.

Canadian landed immigrants from visa waiver countries will not need visas if they are entering the U.S. for 90 days or less as visitors for business or pleasure. Again, they are treated the same as any other citizen from the same country. More information about the visa waiver program, including a list of visa waiver countries can be found by clicking here.

A visa may be obtained by applying to one of the U.S. consulates in Canada. The consulates are accepting applications from Canadian landed immigrants effective immediately. The application fee is $100 U.S., and there may be additional issuance fees. Our office assists Canadian landed immigrants in obtaining U.S. visas. Please contact us if you need help."

Currently, 28 countries participate in the Visa Waiver Program: Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brunei, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Singapore, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Uruguay. Visitors entering on the Visa Waiver Program cannot work or study while in the U.S. and cannot stay longer than 90 days or change their status to another category.

i should imagine that Canada might just do the same thing. What if one wishes to travel to a funeral or in cases of emergencies? Must they obtain a visa for that?? Well this is a reduntant question, however, I can just imagine the troubles that people will experience in complying with this.

I would think in cases like that, there would be an acception showing a death certifcate, etc. Some sort of hard core prove what the emergency might be.

Landed status immigrants need whats called a I-94 Entrance/departure record visa. heres the part that really gets me- anyone who held an I-94 prior to December 2002- has to re-apply. I-94 cards are good for six months and use to cost 6.00 US after the appliccation form was processed and were able to be re-newed at port of entry after a six month period. INS cancelled all I-94 card holders in order to screen people more thoroughly. This situation alone has caused a big problem in the Trucking industry due to a already shortage of drivers. Now trucking companies are in a bigger problem now that alot of drivers who have landed status cant cross into the US until they get the proper documentation.

When Raymond Wolfe was posted here as High Commissioner for Jamaica, one of his main goals over the past 4.5 years was to encourage Jamaican Nationals and their dependants to pursue gaining their Canadian Citizenship - this is obviously one of the reasons.

Too Many Jamaican Nationals think they will lose their Citizenship with Jamaica, and others don't realize the significance of allowing their children the dual-citizenship they are entitled to. There are obviously a lot more benefits, but not relevant to this topic.

I guess I have to thank him for being instrumental in bringing the NDTC to Canada.

Regarding citizenship, sure everyone shld, as soon as they can get their citizenship, but in the meantime....I can just see it now, the blue passport and the request for "ties" to Canada..bank statement, house and land, etc etc still being treated with the same 3rd World questions. When will it end?

Isn't the United Kingdom part of the Commonwealth? how comes they are exempt?

(ackeegirl) So far Raymond's replacement is Mrs. Patricia Rodney Evering (posted as Deputy High Commissioner here since Aug/Sept 2002), now serving as Acting High Commissioner. She is fitting in quite well, is very personable, and is so far doing an excellent job. Mr. Wolfe's shoes will be hard to fill (and he is already missed greatly). Yes, he deserves to and takes great pride as being the key driving force in bringing the NDTC and others to Canada.
