Boy, did I come up against some strong arguments on his part. They include:
<ul type="square">[*]He'll get murdered and I'll get raped
This is one of the worse stereotypes, perpetuated by travel agents, who get a kick-back from the large AI chains. I've been to Jamaica 10 times so far (number 11 soon come for 6 weeks!!), and never felt threatened. But I know enough about resort areas to take normal care when traveling at night: don't buy drugs(easy one, I don't do that
) from strangers, make friends carefully (just like at home), don't go into dark isolated areas alone with a stranger (just like at home)--in other words just use common sense--(just like at home).[*]We'll run out of money since it's at the end of our stay
Sis got the breakfast/dinner plan at Bar-B-Barn, and actually had over $300 left over as we left. We've been so often that we don't buy souvenirs anymore--shop carefully, bargain-hunt and dicker if you must buy mementoes.[*]It will be more expensive than an all-inclusive (he's 280lbs and doesn't want to skimp on food!)
Try some of the local places, you can get a nice meal for under $8, if you don't want to eat at BBB for a dinner, or you feel munchy in the middle of the day.[*]Cockroaches will be in our rooms
I've never seen a one in 10 trips--and I stayed at a board-wall (real basic)place(Perseverance, home of the local hookers)[*]No security to call in any problems and we need security or why would they have them at the all-inclusive resorts
BBB has security at the front gate at night, and on the beach, night and day.[*]No medic on premises
Is he planning on a heart seizure?
To all that, I had to tell him to stop being a honky that listens to rumors and stereotypes. They money concerns are warranted but all he asks is that I find some comparisons for him. I thought someone mentioned having compared all-inclusive stays to staying at the smaller places, because that would help me.
The 2-meal plan at Bar-B-Barn is about $55/night, well worth it--great ambiance!
Right now, I'm looking at some places. Treasure beach does look neat and I'm sure that Mike would like the relaxing aspect, but I'm looking for some nightlife, too. Bar B Barn looks real nice and they have some good specials.
Right next door to Bourbon Beach! (De Bus) I also looked up Tensing Pen, which looked great, but I couldn't tell if it was on a good beach.
