I must start this report by telling all of you that I am a little nervous about writing.
I too feel, as others have written, that I would be too boring or uninteresting but I am going to put all that aside and “step out on faith.” I know that all of the other reports added so much to preparing me for Jamaica. I am still not sure about how to do the picture thing but I hope by that time that I get it together.
For me, this trip actually began before I actually set foot on Jamaican soil and to truly understand how I felt, I have to take you back – briefly. I promise. Here goes!
Pre-Trip Planning
This trip began to materialize because two co-workers of mine were planning to marry at Sandals in Negril. Though we are not very close personal friends, I do consider both friends. I have gotten to know both of them personally and separately and they know that when it comes to travel – I’m there. They invited me to their wedding and they both knew that if anybody would be there – I would. Didn’t realize how prophetic that would prove to be!
The wedding was scheduled for Tuesday, April 15th, so armed with this date, I could start to scour the internet for great rates and start building my trip. Anybody who knows me knows that I am a crazed maniac when it comes to planning for a trip. I can search, research and read for hours upon hours, for days, weeks, months – until I arrive at my destination and my adventure begins. It was through this complete obsession with finding out about everything that I happened upon Jamaicans.com and later Sienna.
I had acquired a good rate for “air only” from Apple Vacations Charter out of Detroit Metropolitan Airport for $310.00 - including taxes. If I did not have to be there specifically for the wedding, I might have even tried to holdout for a cheaper rate! But I was satisfied. This price was for seven days, so I decided to turn this trip into a real vacation for me as well as a belated birthday gift, which was the week prior to my departure for Negril. Now armed with the airfare wrapped up, I needed to secure accommodations.
I had been to Negril only once on a daytrip from Montego Bay where I was staying with 3 other girlfriends for the week. We spent only 5 – 6 hours actually in Negril. We did the beach thing and had a grand time and then ended up at Rick’s Café on the Cliffs for sunset, drinking and partying. That was about 12 years ago! I love to travel and never really consider returning to a place that I have visited because my goal is to see all of the Caribbean and ultimately the rest of the world – though not necessarily in that order. However, all those years ago I remember thinking, “If I ever come back to Jamaica, the only place I want to go is Negril!” I just remember feeling so free – not weighted down! The physical manifestation of this was that I wanted to remove my clothes!! I didn’t - but I sure felt like it. Since thongs were really in, the closest I could come was to give myself a “wedgie” with my bikini bottoms.
Man, what a sight! And what a commotion I caused! I was smaller then of course, but “the junk has always been in my trunk!” J Lo’s assets “ain’t got nothin’ on mine!” What a ridiculous sight!! I just laughed and laughed! That’s what I remember, so coming back to a place that made such an impression in a few short hours was a “must do!” OK…OK….I digress but I thought that it fit! (I will have to continue here with the next installment....work calls...UGH!)
