I am taking wife on her first jamiaca vacation, all tree weeks of it. I have been fortunate enough to have travelled to JA four times, all back in the eighties. This trip will be different in that the rest were when I was single and "with the guys". As well, I had always stayed in the redground area of Negril. Our first week will be on Negril beach at the Beach Club condos. Staying in Negril our first week will allow me to get my bearings and to tour my wife around some of my old haunts (no doubt changed beyond my recognition). I have decided to spend the last two weeks in the Treasure Beach area. We are a young at heart couple in our late forties, quite active, and are looking for accomodation where we can kick back yet be able to walk about in search of the total Jamaician experience. Our budget is the $60 US/nite range. We both enjoy snorkling (Xtabi on the Westend cliffs is hard to beat), so a room with coastal snorkling nearby would be ideal. Am I asking for too much!!??

Re: treasure Beach accomodation
Go to www.treasurebeach.net.
We are partial to Golden Sands, as we love that beach right out the door. Also, you are within walking distance of everything. They have a nice single unit with a private kitchen for 60$ a night. We stayed in that last year and really liked it.
Do you need a tour guide ? I am dying to go!!

Re: treasure Beach accomodation
Negril Beach Club Condons is a good place to stay, Jean & Myrna will take good care of you.
Take wifey to Mayfields Falls or Roaring River, athst a nice day out...you need to contact Sala/Solomon for a good tour guide/driver, you can reach him via Sienna.
There are a few nice spots in T.B..Golden Sands is a fav of mine, right on the beach & you can get a room for US35p.n with communial kitchens, great for budget folks...Also Ital Rest for a laid back out the way place, nice vibes there from the folks who run it.
Nehril has changed LOADS since the 80's, where there use to be hammocks on the trees by Roots Bamboo & Alfreds, there are now more bars, the stretch of clear beach is half the size it was and the sea is recaputring some as well but still loads left!
Times change, for those of us who got to experience Jamaica in the 80's (and lets here it from anyone who did the 60's - 70's, if you can remember any of it!)then you'll see the development.
Dont forget to check out the free live reggea shows on the beach every nite & dont smoke to openly, its still illegal here and lots of cops on the beach uniformed & plain clothes..so hold it down if your lighting up!! have a great time

Re: treasure Beach accomodation
Thank you everyone, we appreciate your suggestions. Can anyone share with us their suggestions in travelling to TB from Negril? Information such as travel time, cost of taxi as compared to "public", travel back to MO Bay from TB, etc. We are throwing around the idea of going back to Negril for the last three days of our holiday and staying some where on the cliffs (looking at the blue castle) but are worried about the hassle of bouncing back and forth. Thanks for your help.

Re: treasure Beach accomodation
See www.islandcruiserjamaica.com for inexpensive
runabouts that would be great for the 2 hour drive from Negril to TB, back-forth and airport drop-offs. Treasure Tours () offers PVV driver/van service as do many of the villas/guesthouses. Solomon in Negril and Carolyn/Errol Barrett ()
offer transport/touring services. All better than a taximan...

Re: treasure Beach accomodation
Travel time is about 2 hours, maybe a little less. You can rent a car in Negril (tiv we checked with Island Cruiser for our trip nad they would not rent for less than a week). Vernon's/Fun Holiday will rent to you in Negril or MoBay and you can return the car in Negril or MoBay as you prfer, we were not charged for this.
There are nice things to do in between the two places - YS Falls, Black River, the Appleton Rum factory, stop at Peter Tosh's birth/resting place, some neat little restaurants and such in there too, even a spa.
Solomon could take you there and back also ( www.geocities.com/talkofthetowntours ). Once in Treasure Beach you can rent a bike or if you are centally located you can walk to a lot of places. We did like having a car there but a bike would have done as well.
Public transport I can't help with, I'm pretty sure you can get from Negril to Black River and then change there but I'm not sure if you can get right to Treasure Beach from Black River or not.

I like Irie Rest in Billy's Bay. It's clean, safe & comfortable. The food is great & the place is very reasonable.
Check out Treasure Beach.net. You can look at places to stay.
If you are in Great Bay, check out the Sea Crab. Liz is great cook & a very nice person.
Have a great vacation

Re: treasure Beach accomodation
Unless you're big on masochism, do NOT take the bus. Negril to Sav to Black River to TB is a day of waiting and waiting around at various stations. There are minibus/route taxis, generally full-up to the gills,so luggage or carry-ons a problem. If time is money, the savings are nil. Drive -- it's easy. Or go with a driver. If you're staying in Billy's Bay or Fort Charles, you'll want either a car or a property that has driver services. Everything else is walkable or mt.bikeable (mt.bike rentals from Morris at Q-Pen for about US$8/day and a deposit.
