This reminded me of my first trips to Jamaica. I noticed that most people would throw a little Red Stripe on the ground before drinking it. I figured it was some sort of ritual similar to some at home --- pour a little out for the "homies" that have passed on. I followed everyone. I found out some time later that they did it to check to see of the beer was flat. OH!!!

dollybaby, love your report! I think I would've lost it if strange people stopped my car and asked for my camcorder...lol! and what a nightmare car situation. I cannot wait to hear the rest of the story. and ona scale of 1-10, where does babymamma fall. Ummmm attention everyone. I am taking up money for the Dolly baby relief fund. In case no one is keeping count this will be trip number 3 in the same year, from CANADA no less. Now I have met this particular young man, and believe you me, Mommie unnastand what the girl is doin'. Really can't say I blame her much, but when the paint is peeling off the house, and the car needs tires, that is where the Dollybaby relief fund comes in.

None of this money can be used for a trip to Jamaica. This is to sustain life in Canada, cause if we don't help this poor girl she will have to file booonkruptcy. Her got it bad.

We get back to the hotel and chill out for a bit. “Want to go swimming”? I ask him. “Yeah, let’s go to the pool”. I go through my luggage and pull out a swimsuit, he does the same and then after much searching tells me he forgot his. “You forgot your swimsuit??? Hmmm…maybe I have something you can wear”. I go through my stuff in search of something suitable. Short jean shorts, nope, short white shorts, nope, girlie cargo type shorts, nope. I pull out a pink thong and hold it up. “How bout this”? He looks blankly at me and says “You think you’re a comedian”. I finally come across a pair of black and grey shorts that look similar to men’s swimwear. I throw them to him “How about those”? He inspects them and says “They’ve got flowers on the bottom” Oh god forbid. I look at them closely, and see tiny white flowers that I never noticed before. “No one will notice”. I say. He reluctantly puts on the shorts. I have to stifle a laugh., they’re pretty small.

We head out to the pool, they must heat it because it’s warm. There is a basketball hoop hooked to the edge of the pool. I swim over to the basketball floating around and ask him if he wants to play. I show him how to play Horse. Remember that game from elementary school where you try and shoot from seven spots around the hoop? Each time you get it in you get to move to the next of the seven spaces. If you miss, you’re stuck on that spot until your opponent misses. Well, he was on space two and I was on space four when this huge bird came crashing into the water between us. I mean this bird was massive, it was the the size a medium-sized dog. It looked like a stork, with a huge beak with bag under it that dragged in the water. I tiptoed around it to get to space number two where Paul was and we both backed way up. The bird starts swimming towards us and opening and closing his huge beak. “I’m scared of that” Paul says. My hero. People start gathering around the pool and pointing and laughing. A worker grabs a pole with a net at the end (the pool pole used to clean out leaves) and makes a few attempts at swatting the bird, attempting to scoop it up. He misses and the bird starts squawking and edging closer to us. Around the 5th attempt the bird is caught and carried out of the pool in the net.

We leave the pool , head upstairs to shower and then make our way down to the FH restaurant to eat. Afterwards we take a nap and wake up at about 11:00 to head out for the night. We get in the car and see a lot of people parked outside Bourbon Beach so we stop to see what is going on. Grab a couple of rum and cokes and sit out at the bar downstairs. It is quite busy even for a Monday night. A reggae band is playing and people are dancing in the sand and in various spots around the bar. After a drink or two we head upstairs and dance beside the wall overlooking the show. It is nice to hang out under the stars and just people watch. At around 1:00 we decide to leave and see what else in going on around Negril. We head back to the car and make our way to the west end. We hear music belting out of Miyard and see people dancing on the porch from the street. We decide to stop and go inside. I stand in line for what seems to be about a half an hour before I get my drinks. I notice a group of working girls inside speaking to two tourist men, one of the men is making his rounds feeling out each girl’s behind like he was shopping in the produce section. I feel very sad for these girls, the man catches me watching but turns away quickly and continues on as if to say “so what”.

I get our drinks and meet Paul back outside on the porch. He is outside talking to someone he knows from Ochi and introduces me. I love the songs that Miyard plays. We dance for most of the night out there on that porch, Dry Cry and Beres Hammond songs are played over and over at the request (almost demands) of the people there. We dance the night away until about 3:00 and then make our way back to FH and call it a day.

I think that bird may have been a pelican!! You described a pelican perfectly! They can be pretty rambunctious...he probably thought the ball was a fish!

Day 6 - Tuesday

Woke up the next morning and we hung out in the room, for an hour or so flipping channels and then stopping on the Negril channel to see what was going on. After getting mobile, showered, got dressed and headed out to find another adventure.

We drive downtown and pickup some stuff at the supermarket, afterwards we walk over to Juicy J’s for breakfast. Usually we would eat at Fun Holiday for breaky but were getting kind of tired of the breakfasts, lately they only had eggs and bacon available. I’m starting to wonder if that’s because of the “mistake” they made when booking me. FH offered me a rate of $57 per day (that’s with tax) including breakfast or lunch and dinner. That was the rate for one person, however after some negotiation with their internet representative they gave it to me for two persons. When I left Vernon told me it was an error and I should have not been offered that deal and not to expect it again.

Today I have Callaloo. I’m not a big veggie fan (I think I’m traumatized by being force fed greens when I was a kid) but I think the fish covers that green veggie taste and I like it. Afterwards we walk around the shops for a bit and then drive back to FH.

Today we’re going to go swimming as I havn’t even touched that beautiful blue-green water yet. I put on my swimsuit, and Paul puts on his (actually my) shorts. I can’t help it and I have to giggle. “What”. He says. “Nothing. I’m just checking out those sexy shorts”. He can’t help but laugh and wraps a towel around himself real quick. I grab my towel, change of clothes and camera and we head downstairs. I start walking towards the FH beach and he says “We’re not going there” and he starts walking towards the road. I’m confused, the beach is that-a-way. “That beach is dirty, we’re going to another one”. “What do you mean?? It looks clean to me, look at how beautiful it is and look at all the people swimming in it”. “That’s exactly what I mean”. Oh brother, isn’t it all the same water? I think to myself. I follow him to the car and we head North to a public beach closer to the big all inclusive resorts.

We get there and the first thing I notice is that everyone around are Jamaican families and couples with the exception of some tourists walking the beach. An elderly lady walks by in her one piece swimsuit and Paul says “Look at that sexy lady”. I’m not getting what he means and so I ask. He says “You’ll never see a Jamaican woman that age wearing that”. “So they never go to the beach”? I ask “They do, but they’ll wear shorts and shirt”. Hmm. He then says, “Even the young girls, they hardly wear bikinis”. I take a look around me and he seems to be right. There are quite a few girls around and they are wearing one piece suits. I notice one wearing a tankini with bathing suit shorts which seems to be the most risque. I’m surprised after seeing some of the outfits in the clubs. I am suddenly feeling quite underdressed in my bikini.

I take some pictures and videos of the beach and then we jump in for a swim.




The water is so warm and clear, a couple are parasailing above us. “Why don’t you go up there. I’ll take pictures” he says. “I’m not going up there, especially by myself. Do you want to go on there”? I ask. He looks up and grins “I’m scared of heights”. So am I. I envision a movie in the making – Stella and Winston Part II – The Tragedy.

I float around and he is all over the place, diving and swimming. He’s a fish. Must have something to do with being a Pisces like me (our birthdays are 4 days apart in February). He’s showing off doing handstands and walking on his hands in the water. I try but can’t do it. It’s a scorching hot day today, after about an hour I feel my shoulders burning and tell him I’ve had about enough. We collect our belongings and I locate a place to washoff. The guy at the bar directs me to the showers and I motion Paul over. After taking an ice cold shower we leave.

In the parked car I ask “What should we do now”? “Let’s go to Sav-La-Mar and look around”. “OK”. I drive while he directs. We pass down Norman Manley and then take a left where we would normally take a right to go to the West End.

By this time I am so glad I decided to rent a car. There is something about being able to jump in a vehicle and leave on a whim’s notice to explore. The drive to Sav-La-Mar was easy, the roads were nice and the scenery on the way was beautiful. Paul snaps pictures along the way.
