It's your favorite fan again. I wanted to throw in my optimistic disclaimer at this point. There are all kinds of "happily ever afters". I am a great believer (especially at this age) that they all do not necessarily have to end with a white picket fence and a bevy of babies. Now I know it is going to be tough flying to paradise at intervals to see the sexiest most attentive man on earth, but it's a tough job and someone has to do it....might as well be you!!!!
I am the eternal romantic, and I have to always throw in the Mrs. Barret of Barret Tours, Sienna, Libby, Trelawny Small, Maggie in Negril, Easy Rock Sue (Ok that one didn't turn out so hot, but she at least tried it). were once tourist (ok Maybe not Libby, cause she met Chef off the Island, but they ended up there just the same}, and they met someone in that strange exotic palce and look what happened. Hey Libby....isn't his name George???
Suffice to say....take a shot honey...who knows.....certainly not half the folks on this board.

Tigrrr, thanks for the taking the time to send your story to me. I hear you, believe me. And I started to see a little more of the other Jamaica that you are talking about on Trip #2. I purposely painted a picture of not seeing all of that (although I started to in the later days) on Trip #1 for two reasons:

a) Because it really wasn't my experience
b) Because when I got around to writing trip #2 others could see how a love for Jamaica became more than a man.

this is a wonderful thread, not just for the fa-bo-lo-us story but all the convo it has since inspired, which is refreshingly devoid of all the judgement and nonsense we sometimes see round heah....

Speaking from the POV of one who has loved the culture, country and ppl of JA for over 20 years - long before anyone ever heard of Stella. Even I fell under the spell of a lovely JA man; an i do believe it can be something OTHER than a bran-new tourist being bowled over by the island vibe and slick sweet talk. An I been there plenty times without messin with anyone....... now with all the recent popularity that has resulted in the stereotyping, he is having a frustratin time tryna 'prove' to me that he ain't just another beach gigolo.

but no matter how wonderful he is (and so far he IS!) I still have that likkle voice tellin me watchout! watchout! All he sez is 'don't worry, you will see in time that i am a good man, and not evvybaddy here is a gigolo'.
Which i do appreciate - that he is willing to accept and understand why I cannot help thinking that way, just let me be, and keep on keepin on wif me.

but know what, yuh gotta play to win. If i don't give the man a chance I will never know what he's made of.... so i goin farward without all the worry bout if I'm gettin played. I cannot let petty fears and worries close my heart, cau he is showing me some great stuff and if I don't keep my heart open for the possilibity, it definitely can't have no chance of goin anywhere!

An here's another twist to this scenario - talkin wif some of my male frens; apparently they get played all the time too, get their likkle hearts broken by tourist girls who say all kine a sweet tings - "Oh yes I coming back to see you, i'll be there", make plans, tell them flight numbers and everything - then leave these bwoys standin at the airport, never show up, and change their phone numbers. When my plane come in late I got a panick message on my VM, cau HE thought I had played HIM! HA! OK, it may not be right for anyone to do that to anyone else - but at least it goes both ways. So it ain't only (some of) the bwoys doin the playin!

..... jus shows that even this cannot be put into any kine a stereotype, when it's all sed an done, it's still individual behaviours......

Well allllllrighty then Sistercaf.....let's open up a new can o worms.
How bout the tourist ladies/or men, who lead my folks on and tell them they gonna help em get this buy that, fix this, come to America or wherever, marry them,......etc. then just drop them like a bad habit.
Take the coookies and run.
That door can swing both ways huh...
I know from talking to my X that he has some pretty sterotypical views of us as well.
As for being warry of J'can guys, I am far more suspicious of men here in Memphis...cause de mamas didn't raise them right!!!!!

yes, that's kezackly what I'm tawkin bout; all adat true too - it goes bof ways, all ways, all kinda ways we can probly never even imagine.

So if we gonna discuss the prevalence of sterotyping an ppl being careful before they jump in the deep water, well we can at least try to keep it real an not blame it on only one set of ppl or another.......

The way mi see it, i can be smart without being judgemental (or try best I can, anyhow)!

LOL @ Marilyn! I'm saving this pix. And OK, I'll lay off Stella the book and Stella the movie since it's your fav. I do wish someone would make a movie about us poor and middle class tourist gals in Jamaica though. Maybe "How Starla Got her Groove Back for less than $100 per day like normal people." BTW I'm all in support of our resident LDRs and the ones who shortened the LD by moving to Jamaica or successfully moving Mr. out of Jamaica (Trelawnysmall, Sistagal, Redj, etc.) I love a good love story.

As all who know me know that trite as it may be it was that movie that first brought me to Jamaica. And....it was just like the movie. I actually did call up a girlfriend who I never in a million years thought would say yes, and asked her if she wanted to go. 24 hours later I had a ticket and a 5 day stay at Ciboney all booked. And...yes, I did meet HIM on that trip and was back two months later. I've done it all except been to New York and San Francisco to complete the movie.

I used to watch it EVERY Sunday, but stopped that practice after I watched in In Jamaica with my guy who had never seen it. It upset him so because it hit too close to home, and I have watched it seldom since.
You can say what you want about that movie, but I am convinced that it helped boost tourism to the island.......and whether we want to admit it or not,,,you might not find Winston (with a biology degree, rich parents, on his way to medical school, and cute, and a good lover, and sincere, and patient), but if you want to "hook up" in Jamaica, you certainly can.
AND.....be it sincere, a lie, or a stretch, I LOVE to hear them boyz lines.

Thanks for the pictures. This is one of my all time favorite movies. I watch it every time it comes on.

I too, believe that it helped promote tourisum for Jamaica.
