...I really had a nice time snorkeling on the reef in Negril on this trip and really lucked out on something that happened to 'only me' in the party of people that were snorkeling off of our boat
I snorkeled up to a very shallow part of the reef and looked and decided that it would be best to go around the area rathar than try to snorkel over it because there was a chance that I might touch the reef...as I came around the reef, suddenly the bottom dropped out and I looked down to the depths of the ocean floor and directly under me was a HUGE Manta Ray with a wingspan bigger than the widest area that I could open up my arms...
My first inclination was to turn and swim away as fast as I could...the Manta Ray was bigger than me!
...then I looked into his gentle, cow-like eyes protruding out from the top front of his body and remembered all of the diving programs I'd seen on the discovery channel and I decided to swim with the Ray for as far and long as I could!
We peacefully swam along together for about 5 or 6 minutes and it was the coolest thing I've ever had happen to me snorkeling!!! He skimmed along on the ocean floor for the most part searching for plankton on the reef...many times coming up to the middle of the ocean near me with a flurry of wave vibration from his wings, swimming at my pace with me snorkeling on the surface...he even paused with me a couple of times, like he was enjoying my company ... No one else saw him on that boat trip and I know that I was truly fortunate to have had this experience ... Amazing, truly amazing!
If you go to the reef, make sure your Captian has some bread or something to drop in the water to attract the fish...it makes all of the difference in the world in the sealife that you will experience! I went last year and was really disappointed ...but this year with the added bonus of the bread attracting the fish ... the snorkeling was great! Highly recommended!
Do try to pick a calm day to snorkel though, because it was very choppy the day I went and water kept splashing into my snorkle and that was no fun having to constantly clear it out from the waves coming inside of where I was trying to breath ... make sure it's NOT CHOPPY ... go when it's calm! You will see an abundance of sealife on the reef with the addition of the breadcrumbs or something else to attract the fish!
