Re: MoBay Hotel Suggestions Please!
Hotfoot, One place I stay at often in Mo Bay is the Sea Shell Inn. It is on the Hip Strip, right across from Cornwall Beach (that beach is now closed) and just down the road from Doctor's Cave Beach (open). Summer rates --- you can get a double room for $450 U.S. per week. It is very basic accomodations --- hot/cold running water, AC, balcony, two beds, dresser and closet. However, it is clean and the management is very accomodating. Also, I like the place a lot because it is very local (Jamaican) friendly. They do have security 24 hours. Also, the Montego Bay Police Credit Union is located just past the main desk, so this most likely deters any trouble. I was just there last week, and it was my third time staying there. Also, someone mentioned the Reading Reef Hotel in Reading. As of last week, this was closed for rennovations. However, right next door is a beautiful place called Emerald Escape Resort (stumbled upon this after trying to check into the Reading Reef for a night) We spent three nights there and were very impressed. It was about $80 U.S. per night...had a nice, basic room, hot/cold water, AC, balcony overlooking the water, small private beach, pool, bar/restaurant. What I liked most about it is that the guests there were all off-the-beaten-path travelers --- no typical touristy types (same with the Sea Shell in Mo Bay). Also, I traveled with a Jamaican friend, and the place was very Jamaican friendly --- we felt very welcomed there (some hotels/inns are nasty about this). Reading is just a few minutes west of Mo Bay --- probably five minutes or so from the Sumfest area --- easy to get a taxi from there.
Whatever you are going to do, make sure that you have a place to stay in advance, unless you have a lot of time to spend searching for one. I say this because when I was there last week and we traveled the North Coast for a few days, a couple of nights it took us some time to find places that were open and decent. This is because so many places are either closed down or in the process of rennovating. I am a seasoned JA traveler, so I have no problem with travling this way --- taking the chance that I won't find anything real nice, or that it may take a while to find a place. If you are one who needs to be guaranteed your creature comforts, then make sure you book ahead! I do know a couple of taxi drivers of you want contacts --- feel free to e-mail me. Also, both places I mentioned have websites.
