Negril Lovers: Where are you fave places to eat and why?

Since our first trip to Negril is coming up, I am interested in opinions on important stuff, like food. I would like to print out a list to take with me of people's favorite places to eat, approximate prices and why they are your favorites. Also would be interested to hear what you thought of the location, or if you have a favorite waiter/waitress

Step up to the plate (or palate) and speak. Always remember, when one is on vacation, the motto is "see food, eat it!".

oh, and to answer your question. Both Rondel Village (Irie Restaurant), on beach side and Chicken Lavish, on cliffs next to Miyard, are very very good. Just remember to be patient when you are waiting for food in Ja. It's not as fast as here in the states. You will go through 5 red stripes by the time your dinner comes... Hi HitMi: My brother is still going and we are excited since we booked this trip last summer! A long wait, but I am sure it will be worth it from what I have read on this message board.

Speaking of waiting, I have absolutely no problem with Red Stripes while waiting for a meal! No shows for me lately because I am too busy working my _ _ _ off so I can go to Negril! Shoot, I have to miss the 5/2 show because I am in Negril. LOL.

Back to food. . .????

Jah B's resturant on the beach road across from Roots Bamboo, prices are reasonable, the food is GREAT. I stay at Jah B's when I am in Negril, so I see the kitchen all of the time, it is always spotless, that is important to me..

Right next door to Jah B is Miss Sonia and she makes the most wonderful dinner size Pattie you could ask for, beef chicken veggie, whatever. Lobster whenit is in season but you won't have that option now.

On the Cliffs near Chicken Lavish is Raggamuffins, they have awesome food, reasonable.

For Pizza, I like either Mr. Slice or upstairs at the sunshine plaza, there is sunshine pizza, also by the slice...

Sweet Spice is good too...so many places so little time, LOL..enjoy!

PS..Alfreds chicken fingers are really good too, but they really raised the price of the now, to something ridiculous like 10.00USD, so I really gotta want them to go there!

Sweet Spice-the prices are great and the food is excellent. I ate so much I felt like they needed to roll me outta the place! It's past the roundabout-make a left when the road forks off (to either head toward the cliffs or to go to Sav) and it's right on the road toward Sav. A locals hang out.

Cool Breeze-it was LATE when I went to this place and they still accomodated me. The chicken was really good. On the road to Sav, and another hangout for locals.

There is a small ital restaurant on the beach road (between Merrills II and T-Water Hotel I believe) and they are really good, and cheap.

Sweet Spice and the restaurant at Roundel Village have wonderful shrimp dishes.
If lobster is in season, 3-Dives, Cosmoes,lots of lobster places.
The Carrot, up close to where your staying is a good day food place. Breakfast, just ask for lots of fruit.

Stop by The Whistling Bird across from The Jungle for a stripe and a day snack. Have Chris or Bim to go up-de-tree for a coconut,Ummm.

Remember the come-soon rule about the food.
Were entering the count down part of the trip.

My favorite is definately uprising....not sure if they even have a sign out..it is on the beach right between mama Flo's and Merrills II..they have the best brown stewed chicken. Definately check it out only 150 J

My overall favorite is Zaro's. See below. But generally,

My favorites would be almost any jerk chicken guy on the road with a 55 gallon drum.
The General across from Bar-B-Barn is a "standard", and on the west end, by MX-III is Shorties (consistant, but he might have gone to England).
There is also, in a building across from Heartbeat next to Tryon's and also Jenny's (cakes/resturant) is another chicken guy, but he never starts till Late.
Repeating; almost any 55 gallon drum guy. How they serve it to you is not what you might expect (although in Maryland, a chicken leg, with bone, on 2 pieces of bread was a 'sandwhich.'
You most usually get a slice of bread, and a question if you want the "sauce" on the chicken. It's a judgement call, but the taste buds will grow back. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img] ***. Also, jerk sauce varies. The origin (and application) of "jerk" is a dry rub applied before the chicken is slow cooked.

My favorite for fried chicken is Zaro's, in the rear of Vendor's Plaze, a 2 story cinderblock building on the west end road, before you get to the post office. Zaro's is frequented by school children and have never pulled 'dual pricing' (which I admit having 2 prices is rare these days.)
His dumplings and coleslaw are both fantastic, served on the same plate (if he has them), which you eat on a bench in front of his "hole in the wall."
Nice guy too. At least once each trip I am there. Closes early, as do all the shops, maybe 5 or 6 PM.

The negatives; Red Snapper was reported (another BBoard before the censorship started there) as being overpriced for what you got of average quality. Rick's is overpriced, but go once to SEE the crowd. Chicken Lavish, 3 times, has only been average fried chicken, but other people love it.

Oh, in general, service in resturants are in "Jamaican time."

Just Natural has always gotten fantastic reviews for breakfast. Later time meals vary according to the reviewer.
Beef or vegatable patties, most agree that Tan Tan (sp?), a bakery in the market square (2 story building which houses the ValueMaster (hey, I got it right) supermarket (a place to visit!) has always be a referal by local residents. However, people do tend to favor certain vendors walking around the beach.

For late breakfast, my usual is grape jam (from any store at home) and peanut butter sandwhich -- helps me afford other meals during my stay. A loaf of bread is on my "just arrived shopping list" (along with mosquito coils and bug spray, and milk/soda pop.)

***footnote; dispite an appearent lack of sanitary conditions, the only person who has ever gotten ill from a vendor was (2nd hand) someone who got their chicken "to go" and let it sit unrefriderated for a long time. My parents dog always got ill after eating chicken after it was in her dish for 6 hours, and that was in NJ).

PRICES. Sorry, I forgot to add them.
A loaf of bread last year was about 65 dollars.
Zaro's was charging 150 for chicken with "rice and peas" (you'd call them beans at home.)
The 55 gallon drum guys were up to 250 dollars for half a chicken, maybe more now.

Rick's dinner for 4 was 135 US dollars for one group, more for another. Note I do not eat at a place which prices things are in US dollars. If they are that tourist driven, they are not catering to the local residents.

Jenny's was 150 or 200 dollars for pancakes, maybe slightly more, and coffee was 50. The cakes in the display case are excellent, around 40 each. ALso 'bun and cheese' for 30 is very good.

I liked the "fried" potatoes (not acutally a french invention I think) at Mi-Yard (pricy) and at Burbon Street (formally deBuss). 150 dollars (not sure) might seem expensive, and since it is approx 3 US dollars, they were IMO.
But sometimes, familar food is good. ***
Mr Slice was about J$120 for a slice of pizza. I will admit people like it.
Having grown up in the NYC area, the quality of pizza is the inverse of the distance from NY. So while I can say to a New Yorker that they would be disappointed, I will admit that I would go back!

*** I have eaten at the KFC in MoBay. 400 dollars for a 3 piece meal I think. Crazy. But crowded it was. I have eaten at the Burger King trailer in MoBay in the past or tend to search one out in the Miami airport. This is just to say we like what we are used to, but one should experience the local fare as well. (End foot note)

A case of beer was about 900 dollars. A bottle of soda can be as low as 40J at the wholesaler for 2 liters (or was it 2 for 40?), or as much as 45 J for a tiny bottle at the Packastany (sp?) store in front of/near Coral Seas on the beach road.

Since I have gone into such a tangent here, single beer prices vary from 50J to over 100, depending where, what time of day, and if a band is setting up, or if playing.

Finally, when walking on the road (more so in the middle of town or the West End) you will see people selling fruits etc. ALso at the craft market by the bridge (must go see), are fruit sellers. You might get a pineapple for 40J, or for 70, depending who, or if it is purchased off the truck. Little bananas were J$2 in some places, 5 in others. Remember, if someone makes 50 dollars in profit, it is the price of a beer or a cup of coffee; not much. Things are expensive there and these vendors have to make a living. However, when a pack or Rizla's go for 20/30, I have balked at 70 (even though they would cost 140 J in NJ)
