Tuesday 2/25

I wake at 4 AM but have managed to sleep through the night fairly well. 4 is a little early for me, but not completely out of the ordinary. I slip out onto the verandah trying not to wake sleeping beauty. Tcha right! Anyone who knows me knows I’m a human alarm clock…but I do try to be quiet for a while. He’s a morning person too and I would prefer some time to myself for right now. I pick up my book and do a little reading til I determine I can’t wait any longer for some of that Blue mountain coffee. I put on a pot while Scott begins to stir. Grab my coffee and head down to the beach in the dark…in full anticipation of the day ahead. The watchman becomes used to seeing me this early in the AM each day. The beach is starting to show a sliver of daylight and the air is so nice and warm…I stick my toes in the water…lovely this time of day before your skin has been heated up…again the warmth is everywhere. The sun, the water, the people…I need this vacation!

I head back to our room to see how Sunshine is. He’s up and ready to start the day…and we do… without looking back. What’s the point? I think I said everything I needed to say last night and I do not want to spend our vacation irritated.
We head to the beach as soon as it’s practical and begin to suck sun, a major priority for me. It’s early and not many people are out…mostly people who work for the hotels getting ready for the day. A few walkers out but not many. This is the best time of day…you’d never know it was spring break. I had heard that the higglers can be a pain on the big beach but I did not find it to be so. I was not prepared for the fact that everything I need would be offered to me while I sat in my lounger! First the oj sellers come by, then the fruit guys selling pineapple, bananas and coconut. How convenient! What a great service…next comes Ciiiigaretttttttttes! Hey, it’s the guy in the dr suess hat I just read about in my book! Neville the patty man is my favorite. I get my first taste of coco bread and this stuff is awesome. Hot and slightly sweet. Yummmmmm. He’s got some pretty yummy patties there as well. So there’s breakfast and lunch without even leaving my chair! And before the day is over, there are people coming by offering cooked lobster! Between the food offers and the people watching, it’s a fun day on the beach.

I check out what’s cookin at the Idle beach grill. It’s a small little restaurant alongside the beach, it has the cutest little lights hanging around with those ever present red stripe banners. I love the lights!



The chef is cooking callaloo. The chef is the kindest looking fellow, with dreads tied up on his head and the sweetest smile…I take to him easily. He (Chisty) shows me his food in the process of being prepared. He cooks the ital food (veggie stew, rice n peas etc) in big silver cast iron pots. The callaloo is looking yummy and I am looking forward to getting my fill on this trip….I tell him I’ll be back for a cooking lesson…but this day…have a hard time removing myself from that chair.

The entertainment comes to your lounger as well on this beach! We are entertained this afternoon by the first of many beach musicians. 3 Bob Marley songs…3 little birds and I can’t remember the other two but they were greatly appreciated. Wishing I had a video camera. We tip them for the little show and scott runs back to the room to offer them a beer as well…tall guy says he prefers his warm…we can do that.

For the record, you can assume at any point throughout this report that we are imbibing (in the room!) every 2 hours or so….one of the reasons we love this country. We’ve got quite a bit of supplies and only 10 days to consume so…we press on…martyrs that we are.

I would love to continue this right now, but again the almighty $$ calls. I need to tan on the way to work this am…what I call preserving the investment! Now you might think I’m vain but I do not, nor have I ever, wore any makeup. A little color on my skin takes the place of a shrink for me this time of year…yes mama, I know it’s not safe…but I’m pretty sure I’m not going to live forever.

Will try to be back tonight! Hopefully I’m not boring you too much…

Oh Leslie I am loving up this trip report. Keep it coming. I know exactly what you mean about the "husband" thing, after being married 19 yrs. After a long day of traveling and culture readjustment anyone can get on your nerves. After the first day we were in the vacation groove and got along famously, being without the at home stressors (kids, home, work) certainly helps. 10 days in JA is not to be beat. Want to come back with us a Christmas? If we get enough of us we can charter a plane from Portland!

I'm really enjoying your report. I'm thinking about staying in Negril on my next trip, and I enjoy reading about all the places there. I have stayed there in the past, but it has been a few years. the pics of Idle are nice. Can't wait to hear more.

OOh I totally understand the husband stories...we've been married nearly 12 years now and I love him to death but we do get on each other's nerves....especially when I'm stressing. Once we settle it's all good though [img]/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

we manage to motivate enough to venture beach right from Idle. The glass bottom boats are lined up, apparently waiting (hoping) for afternoon business.

We walk as far as Sandals where we are told it is not possible to go further on the beach. On the way, I make note of the many establishments that I have heard mentioned on the boards…or awed at their websites. This For Real place is truly a hideous color…not too many around…bet you could get a bargain and be sitting nicely in a brand new room there. Sun Beach has some good specials and looks like a fun place to eat. We pass Chances, and Moondance Villas, which are stunning. I would love to get some people together and check that place out…I was dying to snoop around the grounds. Margaritaville…overcommercialized, this Buffet thing is out of control. Country Country looked inviting and I must say Swept Away has a huge piece of property! I had heard that their beach was swept away, but at least on the one end…it was almost desolate…this is mid day! The Treehouse had the least beach area but still looked like a great place to hang out. We found the best beach shopping to be in this area. There was a nice selection and people were easy to deal with. We bought a nice rasta man wall hanging and a sarong for a friend.

Hung out on that fantastic verandah for a while and then we decided to return to the Boat Bar for dinner. I had to try the brown stew chicken and Scott went for the fried fish. I was totally disappointed when they did not have rice and peas…had to settle for white rice. No callaloo either…the chicken was so good though, I’ll be needing a recipe for that.



I put Love I to work adjusting a nice ankle bracelet in black gold red and green while we wait for dinner. Food was yummy. After din, we wander back to idle and watch the sunset…it was lovely.
