I surfed car rental web sites (mainly found with google.com) and e-mailed for rates, then asked on this and other boards about people's experiences with the places I'd narrowed it down to.

I settled on Vernon's/Fun Holiday for our last trip and was very happy with their rate (special internet rate - you need to ask for that, ours was $60 a day INCLUDING taxes and CDW insurance for a new Corolla with AC, etc - they have cheaper cars too).

I don't have the website offhand but it's easily found at google with "car rent Vernon".

You could probably reserve a car with Vernon via the Fun Holiday website.

i have used Budget and Dollar and they are both easy to book on the internet and have been easy to get the car when i get there and I haven't had any car problems once i get the car.

Have you ever driven in Jamaica before? My wife and I don't for several reasons.

First, it's pretty scary and I don't want to be thrown into the shallow end head first.

Second, I want to get my tourist dollars DIRECTLY into the hands of the people who need it so we hire drivers whenever we go. Not companies like Dollar or Island Rentals.

Third, while exploring the island alone sounds appealing, what are you doing when you are lying on the beach? You are paying for a rental car that sits idle in the parking lot.

Fourth, there is so much to see while riding around I don't want to miss it while trying to get around a dump truck going 10-15 mph. I'm a classic "rubber-neck" and feel like my attention would be better focused on the countryside and not the roadside.

Fifth, local drivers also double as tour guides and every one of them have different stories to tell about things along the way. They know where to get the best food and where to (and not to) stop for the best deals on lots of stuff.

Just my opinion. Take it as you will.

You can book Island Car Rental through Tradewind Tours. (www.tradewindtours.com) The prices seem good to me, but I haven't shopped around too much.

Just putting in my 2cents worth....
I am headed to Jamaica for my 5th trip in 3 years at the end of December. As much as I would like to rent a car, just mainly to have the freedom to do what I want, and explore on my own. I wouldn't recommend it. The reason being, if you've never been to Jamaica, you'll see what I mean about the driving there. I am a very self sufficient person and believe me when I say-Driving in Jamaica is something of an ART, and should not be attempted on your first go round there. It isn't just driving on the left hand side of the road, it's the crazy driving that goes on there. I would have to say that many times the road signs just don't seem to apply or they are not taken into consideration. Alot of the roads in Jamaica are very rough and knowing how and when to dodge a pothole, who really does have the right of way and just general honking that goes on while driving there, would be enough to cause an accident.
Consider getting a driver who knows the road on your first days there, if after driving around with them you feel comfortable driving on your own then by all means, go for it!

I know that some of you mean well, but...

Dream Jamaica asked where is a good place to rent a car, not if she should or should not rent one.

True, driving in Jamaica is not for everyone, not if you are unsure about it, then I would say no. But still, many first timers rent cars and do just fine, Dream Jamaica is not a first timer, BTW.


Perhaps an entirely new thread would be to discuss whether or not to rent a car/motorcycle/scooter.

IM, I totally agree with you, if a direct question is asked, then if you have something to contribute ON THAT QUESTION, not on the decision the person has made....

Dream, how long are you thinking of renting the car??
Sometimes you can get really good deals through a small agency if you plan on renting long term...
