Things That I Hate Visitors Doing.....

Put into my head by the discussion going on within Marilyn's post, I think this could be a way for people that live there, to say to people who come to Jamaica, I would prefer if you didn't do that, why not do this instead....This is not meant to bash anyone, if you mention a pet hate, you MUST offer a solution, no rhetorical questions here!!

I'll start first....

I hate when people say something like...

'I was sitting at the bar (in Jamaica) and a Jamaican came up....'

I hate the way it reduces a person to a nationality, almost to me in a racist manner.
I would prefer even them to say 'I was sitting in a bar and this Jamaican guy came up'

I know it's only a little thing, but it bugs me...

I can't understand your preference. To me the two statements are one of the same.
I would prefer a visitor to say:
"I was sitting at a bar and a guy came up".
Why would you want to differentiate ?

When I am in the tourist areas, I hate it when tourists ignore local people on the street talking to them. I would like the tourists to be friendlier and not so rude to locals.

One local person was complimenting a tourist woman with her young daughter telling the woman that her daughter was so beautiful, the woman toally ignored the local man and kept walking.

I also hate how spring breaker type young women are too rude. I rarely witness it but had a rare experience at the Ville in Ochee this past trip with Marilyn and IT WAS horrible. I know I would get banned outta every tourist club if I had to deal with that rudeness even ONE time.

However, I would like to comment on your comment Ms. Mention and hope that I do so in a way not to offend you but . . .

while travelling in Mobay I meet people from all over the world and many times I will refer to their residence just to advise the reader. I enjoy knowing and I would say most people like to know that read the reports. Many times I will say, for example, I met up with Ann from England in Mobay and we had a drink or went to Westmoreland and stumbled across some Cuban backpackers. So sorry to offend you but I like to know this information and that is probably why many writers to post it.

Also I have seen a few threads where JA women on this board hate when people use the word *native* but I would have to say that my husband uses that term all the time when referring to his bredren. Native people. Native to his country.

This is a great topic Ms. Mention. I am sure you will get all kinds of interesting comments. I am sure as I think bout it the rest of the day I am gonna think of more visitor stuff that annoys me in JA.

When I lived in Jamaica, the thing I hated most that visitors would do was:

Yes, that too would be fine but not as bad as saying a 'Jamaican guy'...But what really bugs me is the way 'Jamaican' is said.

SPG, I wouldn't have a problem if they said 'a group of Jamaicans'...The way that bugs me is when the term 'Jamaican' is used almost in a derogatory manner, as if to highlight that they weren't white, that they were a certain type or person...
I also dislike the term 'native' immensely it brings to mind colonialism....Just because someone Jamaican uses it all the time doesn't make it accpetable, just the same way a lot of rap artists are now using the 'n' word to each other...

Miss Mention there are many Jamaicans who are NOT black and I am sure that you know that

and those of us who travel to Jamaica are not racist people. We have a love of a black culture so I am sure these comments are never meant in a derog way with regard to any color Jamaican (out of many, remember?)

I know few racist people but the ones I do know would NEVER travel to Jamaica under any circumstance.

Now M - OMG - that too rude girl - hope that will not happen to me. I think P loves young JA oomen more than visitor oomen. So if and when we move back to JA, those beautiful young JA ooman may be my problem if he strays. u funny tho - - -

See, making a inappropriate comment is not often MEANT, that's the whole purpose of this thread right???
if someone was deliberatly seeting out to cause offence, that's a whole different ballgame. This thread is meant to tell people what pisses Jamaicans off about our visitors...It's something I have heard other say as well...

If you don't think racist people come to Jamaica, go read the reviews on the Jamaica Grande on Trip Advisor when someone said 'please bear in mind 90% of the guests were non-white'....

Nope I was addressing your comment saying that no racists that you know of go to Jamaica...
This reviewer was basically saying that they had to share their hotel with 90% of the other guests being non-white, therefore saying that people should bear in mind they might have to (god forbid) mix with black people.

I hate it when tourist stay in their own little world with the people they got off the boat with and don't seem to notice the people in the country they are visiting.

Solution: We should realize that one of the big purposes of travel is exploring other places, customs, and cultures, or we will miss the whole point of going there. Solution, become a kinder friendlier tourist. This does NOT apply to most people on this board. I know yall know better.

It upsets me when tourists are rude to the workers, like it's a staff members job to cater to their every whim and need 24/7. I believe I was on TripAdvisor and this one woman gave a hotel in Negril 0 stars because she asked for towels in the morning and they weren't delivered to her room till about 12 that afternoon so she had to use the same towel twice [img]/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif[/img]

And I know I may get blasted for this but the whole "spring break" hype I absolutely cannot stand. Doesn't matter where they are, I think that a lot of these kids are very rude and pretentious acting and they feel as if they run the place since they are there for "their" spring break
