I have a used (Barely) lap top PC and wanted to bring this to Jamaica when we go at the end of this year to give it to an organization, school or someone that can really use it. It has basic programs and is perfectly OK. We have computers from work and do not use it. Does anyone know a legitimate cause and do you think anyone would even be interested in this?

I do not know which end of the island you are going to, but you might want to contact Sweet Lips on this board. I understand that her company just made a generous contribution of some lap tops to a school in Jamaica. One more couldn't hurt.
By the way Sweet Lips

Re: Donating Computers to Jamaica
No she is here in the states, but she can give you the name of the school and perhaps some contact information. I think the school is in Treasure Beach area, her second home.
Just type Sweetlips in the search engine on this site and that will take you to one of her posts , and you can them PM her.

Re: Donating Computers to Jamaica
There are several ways you can donate your computer, infact other items are welcome as well. Food for the Poor accepts computers, they then distribute them as they see fit, they are an amazing organization and helps not only in Jamaica but throughout the Caribbean. You ship the computer to their Deerfield Beach, FL location it goes on their container and is shipped to Jamaica (and other locations). No duty issue, and you can use it as a tax write off. The only shipping is to FL. I recently was able to coordinate a donation of 13 laptops, 11 went to Sandy Bank Primary School's New Computer Lab, one to Treasure Beach Woman's Center, one to the Treasure Beach Emergency Response Unit (BREDS). They are on the container now on their way, hopefully getting there in the next couple weeks. I know Sandy Bank Primary School could use more computers, but that is where my heart is, I just can't believe there isn't a place in Negril you couldn't find to donate.

AngieB was telling me about a homeless woman's center of some sort there in Negril, perhaps you could hook up with her for more info and donate the computer to them, I'm sure learning computer skills, just typing alone could help some of the girls at that location.
Anyway the other organization I know that has a computer donation program is BREDS in Treasure Beach. This organization is awesome, and would be more than willing to take that computer off you hands, and donate it to a list of organizations in need. Here is there donation contact info:

One last contact for you. Treasure Beach has a new PeaceCrop volunteer named Joe Shannon, he is at the Sandy Bank Primary School. He and his wife have only been there since July, but Joe has some great ideas. And the school is always in need of items. For instance someone donated a couple of microscopes and now the school needs microscope slides and covers. Joe wants to start a movie night for the kids, and they need decent movies to show. You could always contact Joe and ask what he needs and bring it on your next trip. I know everyone loves Negril but Treasure Beach is a great day trip and you could drop off your goodies and see the sites at the same time.

You can tell any of the above contacts I suggested you call. Lynnette Henson
