No, not really. I was more shocked when they pretended not to speak English, as it is well spoken as a second language by most Africans I had met. Most Africans speak at least 3 different languages (depending on their colonists, and their tribes).

7. Was it a real spiritual experience when yu come awfa di plane?

My first time to Africa (Ghana), Yes. Now no! I flew into Johannasburg and both that and Cape Town are very commercialized. Cape Town reminded me a little of Miami until we went to the rural areas, then you get the real feeling of being home...the people are soooo welcoming and nice. They all say "welcome home sistah". Lawd...like you wouldn't believe. Especially when di dawg naily bite mi up when mi visit the townships. The place is JAMAICA mi a tell yuh...town and country in many places. Mi sey!!!

Everywhe...Coronation mawkit, wid butcheres and live chicken inna coop and everywhere... Yuh should see the people waiting for the market truck and bus in the early howaz a di mawning...juss like yaad.

What exciting thread, NN, sounds like you are having the time of your life.

Africa is on my long list of places to go..particularly Senegal (since most of the slaves were taken from there)
and Cameroon because it is my stepfather's homeland and I have been exposed to their culture since I was about 10 years old.

Are you staying in hotels? or are you crashing with friends/family?

Besides the ones you mentioned, are you visiting any other African nations on this trip?

Have a blast! and for now I am living through you!

[b]They varied soooo much from town to town and country to country, but one thing they all had in common was their SINCERE and GENUINE LOVE and appreciation for us visiting their country and homes (even on the tours). They were so accomodating that it could appear to be contrived by our twisted and untrustworthy mindes at times but was totally real.

I had many different (new) foods such as Maize, ginger cabbage and different types of fish (I don't eat meat). My favorite was the spice cake made from home-grown spices and fruits. The breads were delish...They had all of our (Jamaican)fruits and veggies, papaw, sugar cane, kokenat wata and guava juice...I thought I was gonna buss to baxide...mi craven bad ennuh. YUMMMMM!


4. Did you meet any prospective basketball players?

5. What was your favourite place to visit? My favorite place was Soweto...because of the love I received from the people (in exchange for nothing) and its rich history. The people of Soweto (old and young alike) have been through soooo much and yet keep fighting. They fight everyday for basic things such as electricity and running water and sewer systems that do not infect the residents [img]/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif[/img] .

The kids stole my heart because of the determination and perseverance they show. They've given me sooooo much to think about.

6. Least favourite?

[b]I did not like what I saw in downtown Johannesburg. There are some really "lost souls", people with deferred dreams and desperate people who have turned to the life of crime (among their own people) to survive. Apparently, many of these "settlers" are not from South Africa, but from neighboring countries, who migrated to SA after apartheid ended in 1994, in search of a better life, and are still looking.

The whites fled SA after Aparthied and took the money and other resources with them, and are now blaming the government for the demise of the country. What do they expect when they've left the gov't with nothing to work with? It is the same ish as any other "invaded" country. The "since I can't have exactly what I want, how I want it, you can't either" mentality.

7. Did you see Tarzan? Is he still with Jane?

Yes, dem play nuff Bob Marley and Sean Paul at their "Shebeens" (places of gathering to chat and waste time and play dominos etc)

OMG [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] Yes, and dem loud and HUGE. I have pickchas. Nuff elephants and other animals a roam round di parks...

have you been to any of the jungles? if yes, did you wear yuh khaki outfit?

Yes, we went on a walking safari in the jungles (malaria infested but to the pills) and saw all sorts of animals up close (very scary).
We were advised to wear dark clothes, so mi fling awwn everyting black missis.

Did you buy of the African outfits?

Yes I did. I still could not bring myself to buy the gold or diamonds though...not in South Africa at least...mi nuh get ova dem wikkidness yet. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif[/img]

Most favorite? Although it's hard to say because they've all had such a unique personality, and I have not been to many, my favorite so far is Gambia because it reminds me most of Jamaica, people, mannerisms, strong sense of self, determination and the humor of the place ...a lot like JA.

My least favorite has been Cape Town. Apart from the natural beauty of the rolling hills, the beautiful mountains, and the breath-taking landscapes, it is waaaaay too commercialized and tourist-driven. Think Miami!!

To be honest, I was and still am very excited to be here...where it all began. I have felt the same level of excitement where ever I go here. The differences are mostly traditional behaviors, dress and languages. The foods differ a little but are relatively the same (from what I've seen) prepared in various appetizing ways.

For this trip my emotions are as follows:
sheer joy, excitement = I felt everytime I speak to the kids. They are very curious and extremely confident and unintimidated. They walk right up and say "hello, welcome to (whatever town you are in) could you please take my picture? Where are you from, what do you do for a living? Do you like Africa? Do you know what the different tribes mean? Are you from a tribe?" If you lie and say yes, then they ask you your name...given by the tribe. I swear, I was afraid everytime them kids approached me with their many sometimes difficult questions [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] ...very exciting though.

Disappointment, shock and disgust at the townships (shanty towns) and what the Afrikkans (the Dutch and other whites who orchestrated and maintained apartheid) had done to South Africa and its people.

It was heartbreaking to learn that I was visiting on the 10th anniversary of freedom from aparthied and people are still living without the basic resources, while a in the suburbs the Afrikkans live like true royalty. It made me cry, it really did to see the devastation left in that country for the poor people and the present government to clean up. TOTALLY DISGUSTING!

I was also saddened and ashamed by the way Africans from other countries have contributed to the demise of Johannesburg (drugs, crime etc against one another). I know it is a conspiracy, but can't understand why we are falling prey everywhere. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img]

Deep appreciation - For the youth in Soweto who participated in the struggle and where so many had sacrificed their lives for the freedom many still seek.

I feel most connected to Gambia...see above.

The one that you'll definately go back to.

I plan to return to South Africa in September, because I feel that I had not spent enough time in the rural areas...if I get the opportunity.

4. Did you see any traditions that linked to the way we do things in Jamaica?

Yes!! It was shocking to see all the old traditions in full swing, that most Jamaicans have since abandoned. The market activities, the houses with kerosene lamps, cooking on coal stoves, kids selling fruits THEY cultivated themselves in their gardens, the way women balance the kids on both hips and the basket of washing on their heads at the same time, women walking for miles with wood for the fire, the orderly way kids behave while wearing their school uniforms and the way everybody genuinely greets everybody and actually stops to have a chat etc. etc.

5. What improvement(s) with regard to healthcare is being implemented by the various governments?
South Africa has one of the highest cases of HIV/AIDS. A lot of money is needed (more than is being invested) in research but there seem to be thousands of rands (their currency) being spent on educating the people of the risks, providing condoms (available in every restrooms, gas stations, immigration and other public offices...literally everywhere you go, it is in your face - protect yourself, etc.

There are other health problems that are unfortunately taking a back seat to the AIDS crisis, because it has reached epidemic proportions and the fight is to control it somehow. There is better healthcare and it seems that the government is spending time and money there, but it seems counterproductive when millions is spent looking for a cure instead of on the cause...(just my view)
