I am hoping that writing this will help me with my P.N.S.(post-Negril syndrome) This makes my 5th trip in the last 5 years and my 1st trip since I had broken up with my Jamaican boyfriend 2 years ago.
My trip begins with a long drive from Austin to Houston. Air Jamaica has direct flights from there and as soon as the fair went below $300, I booked the soonest flight available. My friend got me the hook-up on a hotel room at the Marriott in the airport, so I just had to wake up the next morning and hop on the tram to the terminal but 5 am still comes early. The flight was uneventful and comfortable but still too long for my anticipation.
After the usual airport routine, I am on a JUTA bus headed for Negril!!! I am so excited and happy to breathe in the air I have missed every day from the last time I was here. The new road is nice, paved, and smooth. But I do admit some longing for the old road, with the death-defying twists and turns. I felt I was on my way to an adventure instead of to a resort.
We stop for the usual mid-way beer. Most of my fellow passengers opt for Red Stripe. I like the Guiness. It is actually made in Jamaica at a local plant and drank by most of the locals I know.
When we get to Negril, everyone on the bus but me and the driver get off at Sandals. I tell the driver that I feel sorry for these people. They will have a lovely time but they will not get to see the Negril that I know and love.
Next stop is my hotel, Kuyaba. The place looks great, freshly painted and the grounds as beautiful as ever. I get all checked in and head for my cabin. Kuyaba has several "regular" hotel rooms that look really nice but I prefer the more rustic cabins. I get a 2 bedroom with a kitchen and A/C for cheap. I prefer to stock the fridge with beer (1 6-pack left out warm for visitors) and munchies to economize but I will go to the Hi Lo tomorrow.
Today, I am headed for the beach. I wade out into the beautiful turquoise waters and am again baptised by the Carribean. Oh, Jamaica, how I have missed you.
I go back to the beach to get my hair braided. It is always the 1st thing I do because it is so easy to take care of. I am going to be spending a lot of time in and out of the water over the next week and want everything as care-free as possible.
I have just enough time to get a Dirty Banana and grab a seat to watch the most beautiful sight on earth, the Negril sunset. How do they get so many colors in their sunsets? Yes, Queen, the sun does set when you are not there. But when it does, it whispers your name, and mine, and everyone else's that have fallen under its spell. "Come home, my children. Come home to Jamica."
