Re: OchoRios - My First (And Definitely Not My Last) Trip To Jamaica
Beauty Shop
When I get back to the room me and Tia decide to go down to the cambio and Island Village. Before we leave I call T and tell him the he and Ian can come over later. Tonight Lady Saw is performing at Amnesia. I wanted to buy some finger nail polish because my French pedicure is looking a trifling mess. We go to the cambio and this nice young man sells Tia some perfume.
I wish I had a close up on his eyes. I asked to take his picture because they were so pretty.
We go into a couple of stores and I find fingernail polish remover and cottonballs, but no fingernail polish. I go into the natural food store and brought some sorrel and mint and sorrel and cinnamon tea. (FYI-the sorrel and mint tea is excellent. It’s like sorrel with a refreshing after taste)We cross the street and go into the shopping area behind the Burger King. Tia goes into a store and I hang outside. I see two very fashionable girls walking by and I ask them where can I buy some fingernail polish. They aren’t sure, but two guys, Flame(my name is Flame because I’m not like Fiyah-I don’t burn-just warm you up) and DJ, hear my question and take me over to a salon. I go inside and find out the price for a polish change. Super-reasonable. I tell them that I am going to get the pedicure and ask them if they see my friend Tia to tell her I’m upstairs. Of course they both saw us as we entered the shopping area and could tell me what store she went into. DJ goes downstairs and gets her. I’ve been fussing about getting my toes done all week because the water has killed them. I tell her that the lady inside said that they close at 6:30 so I can come back. She told me to just stay and she would wait for the boys at the hotel.
I go inside and sit down for the next two and a half hours.(ahh just like the States) Really, it wasn’t the manicurist fault-she had two customers before me that got full pedicures and manicures. I loved watching the barber cut hair. He had a flare that changed the simple hair cut to an art form. The news of the week were the 3 Olympic medals for the Caribbean. I had been seeing it on TV all week and watched the race where the Female Jamaican relay team had won the gold medal. I think the locals were happy, but had enough of the coverage from their comments. I also watched Jamaica’s version of “America’s Next Top Model” It was a nice experience and if not for the accents I could have been sitting in DC. People came by to gossip. A man came in with a big bag selling clothes. The only thing that was missing was someone selling some fish dinners.
Around 8:00 I throw myself out of the chair, pay my bill, leave a nice tip because she did a nice job(Tia teased me because I tip so big) and rush out of the salon. When I get outside I tell DJ and Flame thanks and head back to the hotel room.
