Hi JT, its been a long time. I get you when you say that it is sometimes required of oneself to sit back and observe. This post however I think is something unusual for the board lately. It has drawn an interesting group of people (those who have posted), take a look around.

RudeMonk, we've all enjoyed this breath of fresh air. Please, share more stories about your travel, particulary the people that you've met, insightful experiences, spirtual awakenings, etc. Its nice to be in the midst of calmness. Ahhhhhh, lets keep this post going for a while...as I sit on the floor in the lotus postion...finger tips touching and resting on my knees......hmmmmm... The driving in Jamaica is getting more and more reckless. It's like, with the new roads, years of caution and careful driving are now being repaid with daredevil tactics since they feel like they can cut loose now. As it is, every toyota or honda I've ever been in squealed tires at 30, lol...

I know four people now who have gotten taken out through cars hitting them. Probably more if I sat and thought about it. Miss Sonia's daughter, a security guard at the Jungle, and two others off the top of my head. The security guard was just standing in the street, chatting through a window with a friend, when a car passed another and just took him out. That car didn't kill him though, just flung him into the path of the car that got passed. That one killed him. And a very good friend of mine bumped a moped taxi in the rain because it's tail lights were out and killed a friend of his that was riding on the back, unbeknownst to him. Deadly irony that was.

Another good friend of mine, Mr. Slice, almost lost his wife and kid at the death bridge in Sav...I'd say they have a real problem on their hands and as people start tricking up their cars it is going to get worse.

Mr. Slice has very good pizza, by the way. However, I am really looking forward to Luca's new oven getting up and running.

Maybe the drag strip that is going in behind Negril will alleviate the road pressure by giving these guys a place to spin their tires out.

Sis, I don't know of any Shaolin, of temple lineage, in Philly. As the years have gone on, there are a few more monks that have made it out here, but as far as I know none have gone to Philly. Take a road trip, lol...

Someone mentioned Miss Sonia knitting. As mentioned, when she is not cooking, she knits. She makes these wonderful knit tablecloths, dresser covers, bed spreads, you name it. I keep telling her she should make all her own tablecloths, now that her place is shaping up to be more of a restaurant.

That reminds me actually, I have to go and get some thread and some needles and a new pattern book too. I believe you can also commission articles from her, probably cheaper than what you can get at the big tourist trap set up in the park. I'd like to turn her loose on a dress shirt and see what kind of guayabera she can crank out.

This is just a very nice report rudemonk.

I am very sad to learn of Miss Sonia's loss though. Please let her know that people are expressing their sympathy.

BND and rudemonk, I love the two pictures that were taken of Miss Sonia by two different people at totally different times.

I certainly agree with the previous poster who commented on the pink setters being taken out of her hair for Wednesday night prayer meetings and on Sunday for church.

One of the many things that is nice about Jamaica, it's the ability to live ones life naturally. Whatever, naturally is for the person, that is.

Hail up Rudemonk -- post a few pictures of us enjoying the fruits of Mis. Sonia's labors. The I and I miss those afternoon patty sessions and the stroll down to Sunrise for some cafe' and a few of the good Dr.'s prescriptions. Figured it was time I finally registered rather than lurke like the I and I has for a few years now. Now how about some wicked Dub.

i have never had one of ms sonia's patties but have been trying to for a while... either i couldn't find her or she was closed because it was sunday....will definitely make it there next month thank you for the exact location and info...and again GREAT report and photos

I am sure I know the space that Miss Sonia is using as her most recent set up. I have been back in that location when some others had some type of food prep set up. The bamboo back in that area is amazing. I will definately have to get over there on my next visit as my daily beach location is just across the road at The Bird. George - I know you will beat me there as you will visit before me .....

My mouth is watering already! YUM

Thanks Rudemonk. I am glad you found us and did such a wonderful report.

A friend of mine was in jail in Jamaica (ganja of course) for nine months. During that time the only visitors she had were Buddists. She converted. Now her daughter and grandchildren are Buddist. Talk about something good coming from bad.

Stay around you are knowledgeable and fun!

Jail is no joke anywhere but damn, if a freakin moonie came to talk to me in a jamdown lock up I'd start drinking kool aid too, lol...

okay- I took some shots of the bamboo groves while I was eating one day.

bamboo is a pretty cool plant, and some of the groves behind the Jungle nightclub have been growing untouched for decades. Nobody ever really goes back into the Great Morass, except farmers and fisherman. I have gone back there a few times to catch the sunrise and it is like Jurassic Park back there. It would not shock me if a Diplodocus walked out of the water. The river cuts way back, there are sections of bog that are only crossable because people toss in chunks of board or concrete. Really the only traversable path that takes you to the river where you can catch a sunrise without trespassing to the degree you might get either shot or chopped is at the Sunrise Club, across from Bar-B-Barn. You have to ask Luca if it's cool, then you just walk all the way back to the part of the property still owned by the original land holder- the guy Luca bought the hotel from- and follow the path.

I have some shots of that too, but here is some of the old growth bamboo that creaks and sways as you eat.

Pouring out the oil...most people keep a fire going all day long. If you've ever been up into the country you see they burn stuff all day long, lol...




Since it looks like you guys enjoy the stuff off the beaten path so to speak, I thought I'd put together some more stuff. I have some shots from helping a friend of mine sort coffee, how to put your soul into a bill machette, a wedding, collecting honey...so here is a teaser I guess. I also have *tons* of nightlife shots from the Jungle, Triple XXX, and every other major venue from Margaritaville to Risky Business to MX3.

So there is a teaser so to speak. I'm not sure how I feel about the nightlife shots or the wedding shots just yet, as those are all full of my friends. I don't know how they'd feel about it but I'll run it past a few of them to see if they're cool with showing a part of their lives that people elsewhere don't really get to see.

It is true ... I think we love to absorb everything that can be shared that is "off the path"!
Wonderful photos ... it is a pleasure to read your posts. How wonderful that you are able to live there several months at a time - it will be years before I will be able to do that. For now - my son and I travel like pack mules every trip carrying items to fill others "wish lists" or things to set up our own household down there.

Spear- the funny thing is the only two people who wouldn't stand and say something about Leo getting married were Eddie, and Leo's mom, lol...

Floyd made me go second after the man who raised Leo. Eddie leans in and goes, you have to say something, and he's shoving me up, and I'm like, what, what about you...you've known him longer, you go first, so Eddie goes, "Shaolin, I play the sound..."

So I was like, yeah, well...I bought the bloodclaat battery...
