I might teach the kids how to Sell,Na... English is defiantly out of the question.... maybe drawing I am a draftsman. Do they have construction classes or somtin’ . Sports?

I just sent this out to everyone at my company. I'm not to proud to beg... Anyway if anyone would like to make a donation they can send it to me and I am coordinating the shipment to Food For The Poor from my home. Please email me if you are interested.

Hi there,
I am traveling to Jamaica again in November. I would like to send another shipment to the school before hand. I'm looking at shipping to Food For The Poor around Sept 17th, this gives them two months before my arrival to get the donation to the school. The school is so thankful for our commitment, they sing our praises to everyone.

A doctor donated a microscope a couple months ago, and Joe Shannon the new Peace Crop volunteer is starting a science program in the fall. He was telling me most of the teachers had not even looked through a Microscope until they received the donation.

A donation was made of a DVD Player and Infocus machine. Joe Shannon is trying to make the school self sustaining, and in doing so they needed to find away to raise additional money to pay the electric bill. It seems the Ministry of Education only gives a little money to cover this expense and many times the school has the electricity shut off because they are unable to pay the bill. Joe noticed at least half of the children don't come to school on Friday, and every day when they do come to school the children have money to purchase candy. So his idea was to offer a Movie for the children in the morning at a cost of $50J (equals .80 US). This went over like gang busters, they made money and attendance has gone up, once the children come in for the movie the teachers have them for the whole day. And with the money raised they are able to easily pay their utility bills.

The school is requesting the following:

1. Projector screen--either one that hangs on the wall and/or a portable one
2. Pointers
3. Any software, manual, etc. that will provide continuing education for the teachers
4. Science materials:
- Slides with insects, plants, etc
- Blank slides and covers
- At least two more microscopes
- Any workbook type supplies for grades 1-6
5. School supplies of any kind--pencils, pens, crayons, sharpeners, etc.
6. Additional laptop computers
7. Learning software of any kind--especially for teaching the teachers
8. DVDs for Movie day--Grades 1-6 appropriate.

I would also like to start a dental hygiene program. I am collecting toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, teaching brochures, the big teeth and big toothbrush to show how to brush, etc

There are approximately 250 students, I will get the age/grade break down within the next two weeks. 8 teachers.

Any help would be appreciated.

I loved your post and pics...wonderful work.
Like you, we have been at this school thing for many years.
We helped a school near Negril with computers.
If only more people would simply ask their companies for the old ones, Jamaica would benifit to no end.
My wifes company donated six old desk top models and even paid the shipping for us.
Whitehall Basic now has a fully operational computer lab of 20 units.
Many visitors have made this happen and it only goes to show what a litttle team work can do.

Projects like yours and these are just a sampling of what can be done when people start using a little vacation time to help others.
Like I tell everyone, find a project or pitch in and help one.
The rewards are waiting for you and knowing that some children lives can be changed for ever is reward enough for us.

This is awesome! I would love to be involved with a build project like that one. Is the school complete? Is there anything I can do? A couple years ago I was in TB when Food for the Poor built 31 little houses in 4 days, it was pretty amazing, I think that was what really inspired me to help. Your group is very inspiring as well [img]/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img] I can't wait to get home tonight to look through all these pictures at my leisure.

As for the computer lab..simple beautiful! That is wonderful that her company even paid the shipping!

The project is still on going , only the walls are up so far. The roof starts this week I believe. They still need soooooo much as you can see. Any help you can give in anyway is much needed.

This school is going to need so much over the next year to get up and running properly.
So many of these ladies have put up their own money to make this happen and have even borrowed money to go there to help build it.
Every penny raised goes to the school and All of them are paying their own exspenses.

what you did is great! it is an idea i've been toying with since coming home from JA. just haven't been sure where to start.
if we want to donate some stuff, do we get it to you or should we ship directly to Food for the Poor? are you interested in small quantities or just in bulk? are they interested in any computer or just laptops?

First of all thanks for your interest! I'm sending a shipment specifically for Sandy Bank School, and I recently heard about another school in particular in the TB area asking for assistance. So I personally will be sending a shipment to Food For the Poor (FFP) for those schools. It has to be inventoried for customs, and packaged together and marked specifically for the school. If you would like to ship for our project you can ship to me, or I could email you instructions and you could ship to FFP earmarked for Sandy Bank, and I can arrange the before hand with FFP, that would be awesome! We will take any donation small or big (bulk). FYI: When I spoke to the principle at the school if she receives a lot of supplies at one time she shares with the neighboring schools.

Or if you want to make a donation straight away you can send it to FFP and they will distribute within the Carribbean as they see the need. Either way it gets to the people who need it most.

As for computers they need all, not just laptops, we sent laptops becasue we had them, and because it was cheaper to ship to Florida from California. FFP has a requirements for computer donations as well, no complicated requirments, something like they must have a monitor, keyboard, and the computer needs to be at a certain power. I can send you the info for that as well.

I have all this info at work and can send it to you tomorrow if you PM me your email address.
