Bravo Bravo Bravo!! I am SO late in catching up with the board, I got back from JA Mon night and been running around since. The Kem story is funny, I saw him but didnt get to hear his voice, I would have cracked up if I did tho!!

Hi Lil Sis, Marilyn, Vi, Angie, Orbra, Jamaicaboo, and AJ. It was so good hanging with all of you in Ochi and beyond!! I cant wait until we link up again!!

Hey Monk, wait till you see those bathing suit shots...talk about perfect bodies. Not a perfect 0, but who needs 0's when you can have those small waist and round hips and full thighs. Shoot, I was just hopeing that I did not have an opportunity to put on a bathing suit around them. I would do nothing for the ego.

Friday. I’m not in a great mood because I know the trip will soon be over. I got up and was excited about going to Nine Mile, a trip Auntie M and Fatti made possible. (Thank you both so much.) I was also excited to deliver the school supplies to the Methodist Church School. (Note: Please understand I am not gloating or trying to paint myself as a saviour by telling this story about delivering school supplies.) I was excited because I love to work with children here in the US and being welcomed into the school to deliver the supplies was such a treat for me. I value my education so very much and I truly believe EVERY child should have an education. Since I was in high school, I have tutored and mentored and coordinated workshops and learning programs for children in my community because I feel it’s my responsibility to do so. Even now, sometimes I want to quit grad school, but no sooner than I have the thought, an ancestor whispers in my ear and I am quickly reminded of their sacrifices and struggles they endured to make sure I would have an education. So anytime I can do anything to work with someone else in their struggle to get a quality education, I am more than happy to do so. I know the few items I brought won’t do much; it’s not as if I brought them computers, but I feel you gotta start somewhere. I really pray that someday I can do more.

At the school, the principal gave us a list of things we could bring in the future. There was one item that was temporarily ‘lost in translation’. The principal named the item and saw that we didn’t quite understand what she said, so after trying to describe it, she finally went over to her drawer and pulled out a small plastic bag to show us what she was talking about. She pulled a wad of play dough out of the bag. This little wad of dough she had tucked safely away in a plastic bag was a hot commodity to her school. She said it’s so expensive in JA that they hardly ever have it in the school. She explained that they use the play dough to teach the kids how to count. The teacher may say, “Show me four eggs,” and the children mold four tiny balls using the play dough. I thought about how cheap play dough was here and how easy it would be for me to pack a suitcase full of it to bring next time. She hadn’t said nothing but a word, play dough was already added to my shopping list for trip number three.

After leaving the school, we stopped to fill the cooler with Red Stripes and bottled water, then we were off to Nine Mile. I settled in for the trip up the mountain. JA streets amaze me; one minute, you’re on a regular city street, the next minute the city street has become a mountain road. The road was so narrow, making the trip more exciting when other cars approached going the opposite way. Lil Sis grabbed my leg each time we had to pull over and let another car pass. I guess she thought we would either crash or drive right off the mountain.

As we drove I wished the van would stop ever 5 miles so I could take a picture. There was so much to see - the churches (my favorite), the people (also my favorite), and the beauty of being on top of the world looking down on creation. As we got higher up, I felt the temperature get cooler and the air a little thinner. I smelled the aroma of marijane in the air. Tony explained that sometimes the farmers burn a portion of the crop just to ‘sweeten the air’ with the smell. He said it grows so abundantly up there that burning a little everyday doesn’t create a loss in product. Can you imagine that? An herbal potpourri in your backyard. Now that’s aromatherapy!

I don’t even remember how long it took us to get to Nine Mile because I was so excited on the ride up – everything captured my attention. When we finally made it there, I felt a calm come over me. I felt special, that at that moment I was exactly where I was supposed to be. I felt that my whole life had been preparation for this experience. It’s funny, I didn’t feel that way the day before, and as much as I love Bob’s music and was happy to visit this place, I never thought of it as my life’s journey or anything that serious. But at that moment, I felt connected to my past and to my future. I felt all my dreams made sense and everything that has happened in my life up to this point has prepared me for and led me to this place. I didn’t know what to do with those feelings immediately, so I stored them in a corner of my spirit so I could explore them later.

We met our guide and he sang the whole tour. Many of you have been to Nine Mile, so I’m sure there’s nothing I can say about it that you haven’t already heard or seen, but I must mention this. When we got to the mausoleum and the guide asked us if we wanted to say a few words, he turned to me and said, “I’m feeling like maybe you want to recite some poetry.” You could have knocked me over with a feather, how did he know I was a poet? He could have said he felt I wanted to sing a song or say a prayer or leave a stone, but to specifically say he was feeling I wanted to do poetry… I was speechless. I asked him why he figured that. He simply said, “Bob told me.”








When I imagined the path to the pearly gates, this is what I imagined.
