I believe this bar was redone after Hurricane Ivan and changed a bit. I sat on that very bench during my trip in November to the tunes of Jah Cure. I LOVE that bar.

We’re almost at the end but first it’s off to Black River on Day 6…

Day 6 (Part 1) – Our original plan was to stop in Black River on the way to Negril but that didn’t quite work out so we decided to take a little break from the beach and drive over to Black River, another area of Jamaica where I haven’t spent much (if any) time. Of course, we wanted to see the Great Morass so it was onto a boat and soon we were heading up river.





It didn’t take long for us to meet Black River’s best known residents but we did resist the urge to go swimming.







The turning point of our trip was ‘Sister Lou’s River Stop’ where we found a young boy being given a bath and on the other side of the bridge, a young man washing his hair. The guy washing his hair was too funny – he would vigorously wash and rinse his hair, dive into the water for a swim, then vigorously wash his hair again. He did this over and over, several times while we were there.







Keep in mind that this was the same river where we’d seen those crocs swimming back and forth. Gives new meaning to the warning, “Be careful in the bathtub!”

I have a few more pics from Black River but I’ve reached my pic limit on this post so I’ll continue Day 6 later…

Continuing with Day 6…

Day 6 (Part 2) – Still traveling along the Black River we came across this interesting looking place and its watch dog – looking out for killer crocs?





With our little river trip finally over, we did a little sight seeing. As some of you will already know, Black River was the first place in Jamaica to have electricity and automobiles (not sure why) so we stopped by the first house on the island to have electricity (but due to circumstances beyond my control, I didn’t get a pic). I did, however, get a pic of the Invercauld Great House. We hoped to have lunch here but the place was wide open and totally deserted.



Upon returning to Negril, we headed back to the beach for some more R&R. Of course, there were more interesting sights including this bit of unusual advertising for ‘Barry’s Bar.’



We almost stopped for a bite to eat at ‘Niah’s Kitcheh’ – no, that’s not my typo.



But ended up going to Kuyaba instead and I highly recommend it, the food was delicious!



Of course, what’s an evening in Negril without a perfect sunset and these two local girls obviously agreed as they shared the last of the sun while walking along the beach.



Back at the hotel, they threw a fairly awesome party to celebrate their post-Ivan reopening – apparently they sustained major damage during the storm (part of the reason our original trip date was moved to January). The food was excellent – a feast of ackee, escoveitch fish, rice ‘n peas, you know the rest… I had even struck up a friendship with the Beachcomber’s chef, Lucky, who found me some breadfruit – “Pick wid mi own han ah mi yawd.” The evening’s capper was a performance from Ken Boothe who some of you may actually be old enough to remember.



One more short day to go, so stay tuned for Day 7…

Last but not least, our final day in Jamaica…

Day 7 – As you might expect, most of that last day was spent on the beach doing not much of anything except walking, swimming and sunning.





There were still some interesting sights to see.





And like every day here, each sunset was more beautiful than the last.





All in all it was a perfect vacation but then my trips back to Jamaica are always perfect. It took me a lot longer than usual to get back but it definitely won’t be another 5 years until our next trip. I have to say that despite Jamaica’s media reputation, I was happy to see friendly, smiling and helpful faces everywhere I went (even Kingston). It’s a reminder that despite its many problems, Jamaica’s true spirit is alive and well.

Thanks for allowing me to share and I look forward to visiting other trip reports from all you yardies (and yardie wannabes) out there. Mi caan wait fi go bak ah yawd!

I'm pretty sure Sister Lou's is where we stopped to eat stuffed crab - did you try any?

You're absolutely correct - they did have the stuffed crab but we had lunch plans so we didn't have any. Our plans didn't work out so in retrospect, we should have had some... live and learn.

i love this report! The pictures are very nice especially the one where it looks as if kingston was on fire!
You know we all go back time and time agian but it never gets tired, for many of us and including you, Jamaica is "our" heaven on earth!!!
Mi can't wait to go back to jamaica, 19 more days!!!!
