The time is drawing near to go home....I am trying not to think about it but my heart is so heavy....we have a flight Tuesday afternoon. The heaviness starts on Sunday...I see that Cole is feeling it, too. Sunday afternoon, I feel my kids need some quite time...I take them to Cudge's to watch a movie, and rest...the heat is getting to them. Cudge and I have planned a party for Monday night....unusual night, but we want to save it for last...it will be at his place.

Alanah watches a movie, Jonah naps on his bed, and I sit on his veranda and watch him build a bonfire in the scorching heat. I had told him I would help, but he refuses...too hot. He is right, I am too rundown with it...I feel guilty, but I just watch, and bring him ice water occasionally. This will be a huge fire! I just take in the vibes of his property, and picture all the possiblities for landscape layout in my head. We had talked (an earlier day) about what color he would paint the house...I agreed with him. It needs to be pretty, caribbean in flavor, but different.

At one point, the kids find a paint brush....they are pretending to paint the house....Alanah calls out "Mom, look at me! I am painting Cudge's house (insert the exact color we discussed)..." She had not heard that conversation. I yell over to Cudge and tell him what she has said....he laughs. That seals it - that is the color!

He gets this stack of wood about twelve or thirteen feet high...I expect flames will go twenty feet in the air. Should be cool.

Monday comes, and we have a busy day....errands, things to prepare....a final swim in the Mineral Spring (with the aforementioned bather)...on the way back, he tells me he needs to get some kerosene....I am wondering where the shop is that sells that. I haven't seen anything like that. He stops at a house, with a small outbuilding out front....I guess they have it in there....I watch some boys playing cricket next door....savoring every moment. I am trying not to be emotional, but everytime I go to speak, the tears start to well up.

Cudge emerges a few minutes later with an Appleton bottle, filled with kerosene....too funny. We are walking back down the street towards the scheme...laughing at him carrying the bottle...who would know it is not rum? This kind of thing just doesn't happen at home. Then again, nothing that happens in Jamaica happens at home, does it?

People are stopping me now, to tell me that they have had a good time, and they will miss us. I am starting to be a mess, and so is Cole....Cudge is yelling at us, telling us to stay up, be happy...we have a party to throw. He is right. No time for tears. (yeah, right)

We plan to try to eat early Monday night, as we need to get over and set up for the party. That is the evening that the skies opened up.....it had been so humid, you could wring out the air...you knew it was coming, but man, I have NEVER seen rain come down like that....not in a Nor'easter or anything...unreal. Good thing we didn't set up the sound system earlier...when it died down, we did go out and dance in the rain a bit...dwl.

Time to get ready for the party. So bittersweet...knowing it is our last night....yet, looking forward to it. Cole and the kids get ready....the guys are hauling drinks and snacks over, setting up. The road to there is not in yet, so to get there, it is an acrobatic hike across coral rocks and bush. Good thing I brought two lanterns! Of course, the Jamaicans have no trouble....I think their eyesight must be better! [img]/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

I finally have a few minutes to get ready in peace...kind of nice being alone, feeling like I can actually dry off and put on real clothes, maybe a little lipstick....

Finally, Cudge comes back to get me. Good thing, because I surely would have killed myself in the dark....on the way over, he sees land crabs, and shines the light on them....I am thinking he is hearing them, but that can't be...he has a hearing loss...no, he says, he can see them....there is no light, I can barely see the hand in front of my face, how can he see them??? But he points out a half dozen on the way there...amazing.





Cole and are are laughing....she says it feels like a seventh grade dance...boys on one side, girls on the other....we are in the middle. Always.

If there is one thing that I may never understand or embrace about Jamaica, it is the thing about men and women and their relationships. I won't go too far into it, but I am guessing many of you know what I mean...in so many cases, unless you are planning to hook up or something, you don't associate too much with the opposite sex. I just don't get it. Many of my closest friends are males (as are Cole's)...will always puzzle me. Anyway, we refuse to participate in that sort of thing, so we mix and mingle as we wish. it is nice, music, fire, nuff drinks...at first there is a little dancing...then the later it gets, the more dancing there is. I am a little uptight at first, but finally relax, and just enjoy my time. It was a blast! The pictures aren't great, and are random but here they are:

(((GB))) There's nothing like sitting or dancing by a fire on the beach.... ahh... heavenly... and if with friends and people you really enjoy even better...

I understand how you feel about the women and men thing..... couldn't agree more... but like you i just follow my own instincts....befriending and hanging out with men and women alike...

I have other thoughts on this.. but lets not hijak your report for it... and besides im an outsider looking in.. so my own introspective thoughts are just that mine.. impressions...
