Re: Surprise! A trip report

Even in the dark I could see that Red was seriously upset. He quickly turned on his bedside lamp and through squinted eyes told me to sit down. I knew right now was the time to listen to him and not joke around. I sat on the edge of the bed and waited for him to get a grip.
"You called my boss?" before I could answer the next question was coming out of his mouth, "What for?" "I have the day off?" "Where are we going?" "Is this for real?"
Red wasn't asking b/c he was amused that I had planned all of this. He was upset. He didn't know what was going on and he couldn't believe I called his boss.
I have to admit I hadn't expected this reaction. All I thought about was how great it was that we were going to JA. My thoughts never went further than how excited he would be that I had planned this nice break for him. I wasn’t really sure what to do or say so I just let him continue on and on. He was certainly justified to have whatever reaction he felt like having.
I still wasn’t willing to tell him where we were going. My intention was to lead him to believe that we were going on a road trip, let him fall asleep in the car on the way to the airport and wake him up to help me get the bags out of the car. At that point, I would tell him where we were actually going. I didn’t want to stray from that plan. However, the more Red spoke the more upset he got. Sticking to the plan wasn’t going to be as easy as I wished.
Red really was upset. He hated that I called his boss behind his back. He couldn’t grasp the thought of just sort of leaving last second. For as much as he and I are alike, we definitely have our differences. This was one of them. He is pretty private and the thought of his wife calling his boss didn’t sit well with him.
I had to tell him that I spoke to his boss about everything, including what day would be the best day for him to take off work. I told Red that I had planned it around the day his boss had said would be ok. (At this point Red still doesn’t know that he actually has 2 days off from work. I didn’t dare tell him for fear he might have a heart attack.) Red is a very different creature than me in this department, he doesn’t like last minute anything and I have learned that surprises aren’t really his thing either.
The more I tried to make him understand what was going on, the more upset he got. “Boundie, don’t you see? My boss would never tell you that it isn’t ok for you to take me on vacation. He would never tell you that it isn’t a good time for me to be out of the office, he is just too nice of a guy for that, and Boundie, it really isn’t a good time for me to be out of the office. I have 2 big projects with deadlines and ray ray ray blah blah blah.
Ok, I was beginning to feel bad. I think this whole thing was a bad idea. If he isn’t going to be able to relax than I don’t think it is even worth going. What in the world am I going to do? :confused? Should I tell him it is Jamaica that we are going to? Will it make a difference? Does he just need a minute for the shock to wear off? I have never surprised him with this sort of thing before; maybe he just needs some time to sort it all out. Is it just too early for him to understand all of this?
Well, one thing is for sure. I had better turn off the shower. It doesn’t look like we are going anywhere just yet.
