I've been thinking about my trip which I'll be making this winter---I'm going to be in Negril for a week then head east and stay at Yahimba for a week. After that, I have two more weeks to go wherever my adventures lead me--really looking forward to the break! Anyway, I've been looking at the map, and it looks like a possible route, as opposed to driving around the perimeter of the island, is to head north from Alligator Pond, cut through or by Mandeville for a night then head North and end up near Falmouth? From there head east. Has anyone driven this route before? Any recommendations on a place to stay near Mandeville for 50-60/night? Thanks for any help!

Re: Suggestions for Travel Route from Negril to Long Bay
The hotel we stayed at in Christiana, Villa Bella, was $50. Nice, hot water, very cool staff, nothing fancy but certainly comfortable. I believe $50 is the rate you get if you call from JA...not book through the internet, aka the "local rate".
Though they knew we weren't local we got it because we were already in JA when we booked.

Re: Suggestions for Travel Route from Negril to Long Bay
Hey jagypsy, I've taken that route through Christiana and ended up in Falmouth, it was BIG FUN. I haven't a clue as to what the roads are like now as it's been a few years, but when we went we hardly saw another vehicle the whole way, but a lot of donkey loaded with yam. Dang, all my photos are on hard copy and I'm under construction right now or I'd post some; but there were some awesome views up there! Mid day I almost needed a long sleeves on the scooter, it was early June.
Happy travels!

thanks ohliz for the recommendation...
why do you think so marilyn? too rustic or quiet? thanks!

I guess it would depend on the company you take with you, and some good books abd good drink...then it could be a blast maybe.
Anything "to do" in the area is a drive, and the wave, while entertaining for one day, I found the water entirely too rough for much real swimming...nothing like that inviting still gigantic pool in Negril. Shooting those waves is fun, but once in a while one would just like to chill in the water, and that is not possible there.
So like I said, if you can be still that long, one would love it, but I don't think I could stand more than 3 days even with "etnertainment".
I have ADD

Re: Suggestions for Travel Route from Negril to Long Bay
jagypsy, I should have also mentioned that if you take a right just outside Christiana (there are road signs), you could go to Spaldings, which is right smack dab in the middle of Jamaica, and from there you continue on through Cave Valley and on to Alexandria, where there is a road you can take to Nine Mile. Have a litte stop at Bob Marley and end up in St. Ann's Bay!
Both rides are beautiful!

It sounds like just what I want/need Marilyn. I'll bring books, take walks, photos, etc. It will be a nice respite from my life at home. Thanks for replying.
Davis and Nanook--your recommendations are very helpful!

Re: Suggestions for Travel Route from Negril to Long Bay
((hey jagypsy)) confused which way your going first.... but there are so many routes going every which way... depending on time.. and what you want to take in... i use the coastal way when i want to go fast... preference for me is always to cut through the island inland somewhere.. break it up with some stops and unexpected pleasures....
when are you heading there?? seems so long ago i walked into your room at the yoga center to say hello....

how long ago was that, Liz? We stayed there in August just done, and paid $75US for a room with three single beds (local rate). I loved the hotel - it's quaint and feels like you're a guest in somebody's house. But the girls hated it because it didn't have AC - no matter how much I told them that up in the mountain air we don't need AC. we slept with the windows open for the illusion of having cool air, and the girls got bit up fierce by mosquitoes.
the food was terrible, though, but the staff were nice. it's very peaceful up there, with some nice views.

i went from Mandeville up to Christiana, but took a different road from Christiana through the Cockpit country and ended up in Duncans on the North Coast. The road overland was pitifully bad, oh gosh. but the rest top on the seaside at Duncan's (Yow or something like that) was nice with a powerfully restorative breeze.
i'd recommend the route suggested by someone to go from Mandeville to Spaldings and maybe go through Brown's Town to the North Coast. No matter the interior route you take, you'll go through some seriously beautiful country.

It was the first week of April. We called the very day we were staying so perhaps we got a discount since they had space still, or maybe the price went up this summer.
I thought the food was great (dinner - oxtail...we had a small breakfast, just toast and fruit), we were quite cold at night, and we didn't see one mosquito...but early April and August are two very different things.

Re: Suggestions for Travel Route from Negril to Long Bay
Hi Nina, I want to travel inland on my way there and take the coastal route on the way back to the west end so I can experience both. The only time I was inland was, now that I think about it, maybe the year we met at the Yoga Center and I went to Accompong Town on that trip--maybe 5 years ago? Dang... Other than a rough idea of what I want to do I'm keeping things open to enjoy the flow and create an unharried experience as much as I can. If you have any suggestions, let me know. I know you've had some remarkable trips.
Nanook, when you can post some pics I'd really love to see them!
Thanks again for all the good suggestions everyone.
Much love---

Re: Suggestions for Travel Route from Negril to Long Bay
Hello.
It sounds like it will be a very nice trip. I suggest you hit Falmouth on your way back. From Mandeville to Falmouth you'll be backtracking. After Mandeville I'd go to Christiana, then through Alexandria and Brown's Town to Runaway Bay. From there head along the coast.
Another option is to head east from Mandeville through Kingston, then cut accross the mountains there, to Buff Bay (check on road conditions before setting out).
Depending on the amount of time you can spend in transit, you can detour through some amazing countryside. In Jamaica getting there is half the fun.
