We ask for your name, address, gender, age, and where your family is from, if you know. This is for our own research purpose to identify trends and hopefully tease out some useful information about ancestry that we can share with the community.

All information is highly confidential. When your sample is sent to the lab, it is barcoded. The people handling your DNA have no idea who you are or anything about you.

my last question was based on the following:

Dr. Kittles then compares your sequence to the sequences in our database to look for a match. Our is the most comprehensive database of African DNA sequences. It contains over 11,000 African mitochondrial DNA sequences and over 12,000 African Y chromosome sequences. The database is segmented by country and ethnic group. The primary focus of the database is West and Central African countries. However, we have a representative sampling across the continent.

We are a mail-order service. We send you the kit and you return it to us, postage-paid via Federal Express.

Ancestry testing is based on mtDNA and Y chromosomes (Y chr). MtDNA is inherited clonally from the mother. Therefore, you have the same mtDNA as your mother, her mother, her mother, her mother, etc. The DNA doesn't change tremendously over time. So it really doesn't matter what other "DNA strains" a person has. What defines their maternal ancestry is their mtDNA.

The same is true for the Y chr. It is inherited clonally by males from the father. So a male's Y chr is the same as his father's, his father's, his father's, etc. What defines their paternal ancestry is their Y chr.

Do you get down to specific area in a certain country where your DNA may match? For example a tribe. Is this information provided in the results? Do you have any association with other groups that can help a person with information on area where the DNA search point to. I remember reading an article where a lady went to Africa to visit the tribe her lineage was from.

Now, Welcome Gina! What is the benefit of the DNA testiong? ie what di people use the information for? To travel to L'Afrique and reconnect? In general, how do the client's use the info u give them?

What u think about Strom's 80 odd y/old daughter- (that just revealed that he was in fact her daddy all this while)? Would your testing have revealed this info sooner?

The process takes approximately six weeks from when we receive your swabs.

Sometimes we can be as specific as a city or a region i.e., Northern Nigeria. But mostly it is the country level. The ethnic group, if we find it, is included in the results. We are working on developing resources to help our customers once they have their results. Right now, we include a CD-Rom with an encyclopedia of the history and culture of many African nations.
