Cops were grilling two suspects yesterday in the brutal murder of 13-year-old Tyisha McCoy - including a man investigators believe flew into a rage when the Harlem girl refused to pay him for braiding her hair, sources said.
Tyisha's guardian, Carolyn Thompson, recently had confronted the unidentified man as he braided Tyisha's hair inside her Riverside Drive home, a law enforcement source said.

Thompson told him to get out and scolded him for flirting with a 13-year-old girl, a police source said.

"Thirteen?" said the man, who met Tyisha on the Internet, according to the source. "She told me she was 17."

After arguing with Thompson, a prominent community leader who had raised Tyisha, the suspect threatened, "You know, you have a lot of expensive stuff here," the source said.

Tyisha was found bound, gagged and strangled last Thursday night on a bed in the ransacked 11th-floor apartment. About $3,000 worth of jewelry had been swiped; there was no sign of forced entry.

Cops managed to lift a fingerprint off a jewelry box inside the home, sources said, and tracked it to one of the suspects being questioned yesterday.

That suspect gave up his pal: the man who had been kicked out of Tyisha's home for braiding her hair, the source said. No arrests had been made, but the source said both men had made statements to investigators, with one saying he was "enraged that the victim did not pay for the braids."

Last night outside the 30th Precinct stationhouse, a crowd of about 75 people gathered as the suspects were being questioned. Charges could be filed today, sources said.

Until recently, Thompson believed that her slain son had fathered Tyisha. Neighbors said Thompson continued to rear the girl as her granddaughter even after learning they had no blood ties.

"She loved her like that anyway," said neighbor Gennette Himenez, 33, adding that Thompson told her that Tyisha was "hanging around with the wrong people."

Thompson, vice chairwoman of Harlem's Community Board 9, could not be reached. Her son, George, 39, said detectives stopped by yesterday to look at the crime scene again.

"If and when they get caught ... I will be very happy," George Thompson said of the killers. "But that will be a sad day. Somebody's mother is going to lose a child, just like I did."

Tyisha McCoy died over a $100 hairdo.
Stunning reporters and cops alike, a Bronx parolee yesterday admitted ordering the murder of the 13-year-old girl because she refused to pay him for braiding her hair.

"The braids were $100. She didn't pay me, so I sent someone there to do it," Kenneth Smith, 24, blurted in response to a Daily News reporter's question outside the 30th Precinct stationhouse in Harlem.

Smith, a paroled armed robber who met Tyisha on a teen phone-chat line, said he sent a pal to the girl's Riverside Drive apartment last week.

Smith fingered ex-con Parris France, 22, for strangling the teen and snatching $3,000 of her guardian's jewelry.

"I did not do the killing myself. But I saw who did it," said Smith, whose dramatic sidewalk confession could help convict him of murder. "He's upstairs [being questioned]."

Smith, whose hair was done up in immaculate cornrows, was arraigned on murder and burglary charges along with France.

Despite Smith's attempt to shift the blame, prosecutors said he told cops he strangled Tyisha with the shoelace from a boot because he feared she could identify him.

The admissions piled more heartache on the custodial family of the teenager, who was born in jail and was removed from her mother's care two years ago over allegations of neglect.

"Pretty sad, isn't it?" said George Thompson, whose mother, Carolyn Thompson, had custody of the girl. "It's a child, for crying out loud."

"I'm glad they caught him," added Rhonda Ramseur, Tyisha's mother.

Even Smith's sister blasted him, saying news of the crime "ran chills through my body."

"I just want [Tyisha's family] to know that someone in Kenny's family cares," said Shirley Evans, 31, a mother of twin girls who said her brother learned how to braid hair in prison. "I am deeply sorry for what happened."

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly branded the slaying a "terrible crime" that cut short a tormented but promising life.

"These are two adult males," he said. "This is a 13-year-old girl."

Cops say Tyisha, who often dated older men, met Smith on a phone-chat line for teens, and he agreed to braid her hair at her apartment.

When Carolyn Thompson, a prominent Harlem community activist, saw the older man, she tossed him out of her apartment.

"She walked in on him and said, 'What are you doing with her? She is a little girl,'" a police source said. "Words were exchanged, and he menaces her by saying, 'You have a lot of nice [stuff] in here.'"

Cops said McCoy later let France and Smith into the apartment, where they throttled the girl and Smith looted Thompson's baubles.

After McCoy's body was found Thursday, cops quickly tracked down Smith, who was sprung in July 2001 after serving seven years for robbery.

Sources said that detectives lifted a fingerprint from Thompson's jewelry box that belonged to France, an ex-con with a record of drug offenses, and that France quickly implicated Smith, who in turn blamed his fellow felon.

(Harlem-WABC, July 7, 2004) -- Two men have now been charged with the murder of a 13-year old girl in Upper Manhattan.

Tyisha McCoy was found bound, gagged, and strangled in the apartment she shared with her guardian. Now police say she knew her killers.

Sources say those two men are 24 year old Kenneth Smith and 22 year old Paris France. Both men have now been charged with second-degree murder and burglary. Police say that Tyisha knew the pair and she met one of them on the Internet. one of the men apparently braided the 13-year-old little girls hair and when she didn't pay, he flew into a murderous rage.

Carolyn Thompson, Victim's Guardian: "I've been doing well, very well holding up with this. It comes, it goes."

The emotionally drained guardian of Tyisha Mccoy spoke for the first time about discovering the 13-year old bound body gagged with a rag and strangled with a telephone cord.



Thompson: "I don't know what to say because it is horrendous. That's all I can say. It's the second time. I lost a son in '91 in a drive-by shooting. So this is very hard."

In the front vestibule, there is a makeshift memorial to the promising honors student who in recent months started on a dangerous downhill slide. Tyisha's cousin says she spoke with the teenager's guardian about growing problems.

Maisha Wilson, Victim's Cousin: "She says she was having a difficult time with Tyisha. Tyisha didn't want to come in on time."

Sources say the girl started hanging out with older men. They believe that one of the men had been in the apartment previously with Tyisha. When Thompson found them, the man apparently warned Mrs. Thompson not to leave her jewelry lying about.

Thompson: "She must have known them. She let them in, so I don't know... because I didn't know them."

Sources also say that Tyisha had just graduated from the eighth grade and had only lived with Thompson for two years. Again, Kenneth Smith and Paris France are now both charged with murder and burglary.

I am so saddened after reading of these 2 murders. I am truly at a loss of words. I just cannot imagine why this little 13 year old would get involved with these older guys who allegedly have prison records. Something must have been missing for her life...and to kill her for a mere 100 dollars? Laawd ppl wickid sah.

Derek, could you post a link for that e-mail from Mr. Cool? If that letter is legit, then one could imagine that this could be related to things like that rather than a concert with a no-show artist etc. I saw where LadySaw's name was mentioned, and the e-mail addy..Imagine a Juhmaican promoting a Nigerian show...hmmm...mi noh tink soh; someting innah someting here. Someboddi mussi feel robbed and cheated, a possible motive for revenge. The poor children, **shaking mi head** too sad for words on every side.

Yuh know, the ironic thing about it.. Back a yard, people loose their lives for much less than anything we have seen here.
I remember growing up, and if the idlers from our side killed one guy from the next, then they would try to kill a couple from our side in revenge.
I remember waking up one saturday morning and seeing a "Tribe" a people from a joining scheme in the community. Apparently one guy from the other scheme had a girlfriend living in our community, so he was visiting her, sitting on the verandah.. Any some guys from a gang in our scheme decide that "Nuh Next Scheme man caant a deal wid woman from our scheme" So what they did? The sneaked up on him, and shot him in the head.
This guy was not in any gang, just checking his girlfriend, probably even hail the man dem pon the corners more time.
Anyway, as the next scheme tribe walked out the our scheme, well bex, I remember one guy coming to me and saying, " -X- ( he used my nick name, but it wasnt -x-) Mi and yuh played ball together pon the same team, so mi a warn yuh. We a kill 5 a unno fi 1 a wi.. So duh, warn yuh family. Cause not even the "baby pon di breast" we ago ease up"..
I never forgot that day.. About 5 minutes after the crowd had left, as people drift indoor, afraid to come outside, the place got very quiet, with the exception of one youth from a community crew. Him lean up pon on a wall right cross from me, rubbing the weed in his hand miggle to build a "elevation". From the corner of mi eye, I just see bout six man rush from the walkway behind me, and pass me, and ambush the youth, they beat him with some rathid big board and iron.. I remember seeing froth coming from the youth mouth and the sound a him skull when the licks connected. Him lying on the ground in spasms as they ran away from him cause the rest of the crew came running wid dem things. I rember one bredren bawl out.. "Him dead to rathid. Now di war start!"

Long story short, we had to throw him a car, and blast go to Spanish Town hospital...
Nuff man dead after that,because of that, including my best friend during childhood...
So dont be surprised.. It nuh right, but to many, life is a cheap commodity.


On the flip side, we all know that Derek's Kool C letter is Derek's creativity right???

Unbelievable....that's why I coudln't tell you when last I went to a reggae event. It took one episode of being on the balcony of the Concert Hall and seeing the people downstairs and at either end of the balcony panic and run, followed by the MC coming on stage and saying that someone had been killed to dampen MY enthusiasm. Too bad really [img]/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img] . Where is Sukuna? We had a discussion recently Pon de Verandah about the events that I do and don't attend. Wonder why huh? Now you know.

FAILED REGGAE CONCERT DREW ANGRY RESPONSE

MUSIC PROMOTER Farouk Musah, shot dead in his Hummer, had been threatened following a failed reggae concert last month. Turmoil began swirling around Musah, a concert promoter, when popular Jamaican dance hall artist Bounty Killer failed to take the stage for the June 27 Toronto International Reggae Festival he was headlining.

Organizers said the Lamport Stadium show had been delayed because technicians contracted to do the sound had problems with their system. As a result, the show ended at 11 p.m. -- without featuring the headliner -- because of the city's noise bylaw.

Musah, 33, fielded questions from irate fans on a live phone-in radio interview following the event. People, who paid $60-$100 for the concert, demanded their money back and constantly quizzed Musah on whether Bounty Killer was paid. When Musah said there wouldn't be cash refunds he was threatened several times.

Musah was shot and killed early Sunday morning. He was found in the driver's seat of his white Hummer, at Sherbourne St. and The Esplanade, after residents called police to report gunfire just after 5 a.m.

The concert organizers, who worked with Musah, addressed the murder yesterday and said in a statement, the idea that "someone began entertaining thoughts of murdering the promoter after a failed reggae concert is mere speculation and it is prudent that the public, sponsors and the event organizers await the police investigation."

They said Musah quickly found a solution to the problem when he booked the act again for a date later this summer.
