I did write a screenplay, "The Annihilation of Fish," in which James Earl Jones played the title role with brilliant back up from Margot Kidder and Lynn Redgrave. It had a limited run in LA and the producers are now plotting a release strategy. James was fun to work with--very thoughtful, quiet and professional--a wonderful actor. The only problem is I couldn't get him to pronounce "**** " the way we say it. He also couldn't manage "guzu." He played the character brilliantly. Lynn Redgrave was awesome. I hope you get to see it one day.

Based on this I just ordered The Lunatic, TGY and GHTT... ( as well as The Physics of Startrek)... Hope they live up to the recommendations... If I dont like them I am sure Esmerelda will enjoy chewing them... [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]

Mr winkler your books are great and interesting, and some of them are so hard to find but they r worth it. Your books are the best jamaican books i have read.

Mr Winkler i need help, i want to do an essay on 3 of your books, The Lunatic, The Duppy, The Painted Canoe. I am a student in a Canada and this essay is worth 30% of my overall grade. Really want to write on a jamaican novel because i find the novels available here to be quite boring. My teacher says that if I don't get a literary Criticism on one of your books menioned above, i have to choose another author. I have done a lot of research to get the rest of the informathion she wanted and i only need a literary critisicm to write the essays on your novels. Please help!!!!

I don't keep up with literary criticism, but I've discovered that more has been written about my work than I realize. Kim Walcott, who is also my editor, wrote her doctorate dissertation on me for her PhD in English at UWI. Usually, when a dissertation is finished and accepted, it is placed in the archives of the Jamaican National Library or in UWI's library. The title of her dissertation is "Locating Anthony Winkler" and you might be able to read it online. If there is an academic expert on me, it is Kim. Her email address is

Yes, we're a G-rated site, so the administrators don't allow ppl to take step with language! You should have seen when I posted a favourite poem of mine, The Owl and the Pussycat... [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]

I'm going to keep an eye out for The Annihilation of Fish - maybe the re-release strategy will include putting it on video. I'll declare up front that I have a hard time with American actors doing Jamaican accents (they can never get it right enuff for me, and that includes the guy who gave Stella her groove back [img]/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif[/img] ). But I'm curious about the story and how the big-name actors handle it.

My next questions to you: What are the challenges of being a Jamaican author? Did you become an author after leaving home - meaning that your desire to write may have been a form of nostalgia or homesickness (like George Lamming or V.S. Naipaul)? You mentioned that one of your work was translated into German - do you find that your stories reach beyond those who know Jamaican culture?

I am 2/3 thru "The Lunatic" (I started it today).

I actually laughed out out loud at times. It's a good read. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] I am lending it to a Psych Clinical Specialist next (figured she's be impressed at the auditory & visual halucinations)
