Kwanzaa is a non religious African centered holiday which celebrates the importance of family, community and culture and is based on the principles found in traditional African harvest festivals. Kwanzaa goes for 7 days from December 26th - January 1st. Each day is a associated with a specific value or principle called the Nguzo Saba. Nguzo saba is Swahili for " 7 principles" which are:

Umoja -means "Unity
kujichgulia - Self-Determination
Ujima - Collective and Responsibility
Ujamaa -cooperative Economics
Nia _Purpose
Kuumba - Creativity
Imani - Faith

These are the seven value system that Kwanzaa encourages and families of African descent to incooperate and practive during the celebration.

Good morning Ken!
My question is why is Kwanzaa celebrated at the time of year that it is? It seems to be following a Christian holiday. Why not at the beginning of the year?

Kwanzaa is a part of Continental African Roots,
