Yea, I wanted to work with a Jamaican publisher; with someone who could share my vision for the book. I think that's the best decision I ever made for Twin Guinep did such a fabulous job. If/when you see it, you will agree that the quality of the production is first class. Big up Dennis and Jackie Ranston of Twin Guinep.

I'd agree with that - Zoe and Jackie were quite pleased when I replied to their Media Release last month.


Have you written anything in patois? If not, is that something you would consider doing over the course of time.

Yea, sorry I did miss the questions. The challenges were really trying to get to the end of it - Twin Guinep had agreed to publish early on, but none of us knew what a massive job it was going to be. For all of us - writing, fact checking, editing and of course doing the layout etc. Getting the illustrations was particularly difficult as they came from so many different sources.

But lots of people were helpful (cancelling out the difficult ones!).

Once the book came out, I have tried to put aside all the problems involved; those could be the subject of an entire book.

What's made up for the agony has been the terrific reception the Encyclopedia has had in Jamaica and among people overseas who have seen it. The difficulty now of course is getting the word out.

One of the things I find talking to other writers who do Jamaican books is wide distribution so it available in North American bookstores etc. Have you experience this with any of your books?

Actually I use a lot of patois in my short stories - and I do a lot of what the linguists call 'code switching' - moving back and forth between English and Jamaican Creole (patwa, dialec' or nation language). So check out my collections: Summer Lightning, Arrival of the Snake Woman, and Discerner of Hearts.
I believe in allowing my characters to speak in the voices they would use in real life.
