Thanks Olive...I am certainly going to get a copy...one of the reason I created this site was also to extend the knowlegde for generations...

In your interviews for the book is there one person who you would say is a "walking Jamaica" library?

Q If you remember - What was the first word (or phrase) that entered (or wrote down) as part of the book?

How you expect me to remember this, man, after some half million words! But the first entry is definitely ABENG. So maybe that's where I started. Thanks for the congrats and vibes.

Xavier, I'm proud of you, man.
I wouldn't name any one person as a 'walking Jamaica' library - but there are many people who know the 'real Jamaica' because they have lived it, respected it, and done their research - for example - Louise Bennett Coverley - our beloved Miss Lou. Then there are the musicians/musicologists such as Olive Lewin and Marjorie Whylie, people like Professor Rex Nettleford, academic as well as founder of the National Dance Theatre Company and I could go on and on -
If you are not familiar with it, you should also take a look at the Dictionary of Jamaican English by Cassidy and LePage. This book has just been republished by the UWI Press. When it came out, it was an eye-opener, for there upon the printed page were all the words we were told was 'bad-talking'.

Some very familiar names. Miss Lou is truly an inspiration and blessed us here with her presence last year in a lively discussion. The dictionary is a good book and is a part of my library of Jamaican books.

I have one final question. It is important to pass on our rich heritage to our children especially in a time when everything is based on the "fast food" mentality. What are your suggestions on how to do this with the books you have written?
