Myrna Loy, born in Britain of Jamaican descent, has written and published her first book based on the impact of being born in a dual cultured
environment under a project called 0,1 Space & Identity. The concept behind 0, 1 Space & Identity is to examine the effect of migration (0), and any subsequent experiences of reintegration, displacement, alienation and/or
disillusionment, and how those experiences impacted on the next generation (1) and beyond. '0', equates to the generation of our parents (i.e. those born outside Great Britain) and '1" equates to 1st Generation (those born in
Great Britain). 'O' symbolises space, and '1' symbolises Identity - "Out of Many 1 People", an aspiration acquired from the ethnographic fieldwork in Jamaica. Myrna says: "Spending most of my adolescent and adult life trying to cultivate myself into being a Jamaican, I arrived in Jamaica to find that I was totally different from Jamaicans both in identity and culture. I
decided to share my strong reactions to this discovery with others."

Hello Ms Loy.

Welcome and thank you for joining us. I may not be around later but I wanted to make sure I got my questions in. I really enjoyed reading your story each month when it was featured here on JA.com. I looked forward to the next installment each month. Many of your encounters were so familiar, your descriptions were hilarious. I always wondered if a board member wrote it and if it were a true story.

1.) What promoted you to share your story with the JA.com family?

2.) Do you browse the site often?

3.) Is the book a continuation of the series? Do you describe in the book details of what led you to Jamaica?

4.) Do you know what became of the package that was left in your possession right before you left to go home?

5.) Have you been back since and if not do you plan to go back?

5.) When you returned home and thought about your trip how did you feel? How did you feel about the family you just visited and the way you were treated? Where you glad you made the trip?

6.) I love your art work. Now that your an author which do you find more fulfilling? Do you plan to continue writing?

Dear Tee Tee -- had I realised I would need to respond to so many questions I would have logged on much early, but I will answer as quickly and as succinctly as I can. 1) I was prompted to share my story with the JA.com because it was important for me to have the reaction from a 'jamaican' standpoint. When it was endorsed by JA.com, it made me feel more comfortable publishing it. 2) I do not browse the site often only if I am seeking something in particular. 3) The book is an amalgamation of the series and has to it a second chapter where I went back to Jamaica and examined my reaction and resolved my issues. 4) The package was left at the hotel. I presume 'Winston' collected it! 5) When I got home, I felt relieved. The way I was treated was explained in my memoir. 6) All artforms, poetry, visual arts and writing carry equal weight and serve their own purpose. I love them all.

Yes I was born in North London and I would definitely consider doing some work solely on Jamaica but it would take a few months for me to achieve that and do myself and the island justice.

I get asked that all the time. My mother named me after the actress Myrna Loy. She hoped it would bring me wealth and fame like the artist. Who knows.. I may be on my way:-)

Thanks for joining us on the forum. I recently did a paper titled "Jamaican Tourism: Beyond the Beaches" that I think is in some ways, similar to your "Other Side of Tourism" feature and quite enjoyed it actually - Especially after I came back and read your work on Ja.com

1. What prompted you to write "The Other Side of Tourism"?

2. Are there any similar publications in the works?

3. Where did you get the Space/Identity idea from?
