What is the origin of the Jamaican proverb “The higher monkey climb, the more him expose” when there have never been monkeys in Jamaica?

This expression could be from Africa or the Indian subcontinent. Is there a possible South American connection? Any ideas?

u know mi neva read John's column this past Sunday....thanks for reminding me by posting it here

u have to subscribe to the Jamaica Journal and of course order from their back issues....the articles r the bomb and a must reading...truss me

the subscription is cheap ...the ongle worrisome ting is the long wait since they ongle do three issues a year and two if one is a double issue and the mail is slow for the rate they send it ,but it is worth the wait....

i have subscribed whenever it has been in print, since high school and it is worth every penny and every moment spent reading it

I only went to primary school in Jamaica - I didn't stay there long enough. It was the sweetest part of my childhood.

I came to France after university to improve my fluency then I was going to head off to Africa, but haven't crossed the Mediterranean as yet...
