Book Discussion - Jamaica Blue

Hello everyone.

First off, Misty thanks for your suggestions in the other thread, but I decided to go with another book for this discussion. How about you pick the next one?

Anyone interested, how about we meet back here 3 weeks from tomorrow, March 3? I think that should be enough time.

I'm midway through One People by Guy Kennaway, but sure, I'll take a read of Jamaica Blue (if it's available through my local library).

ColeS - One People is very funny. It's the story of a fictional small town near Negril, and the various characters who people it.

The author has a habit of slipping in and out of patwa in his narrative, and that makes the book fun to read. Of course, his patwa is not always on (in terms of communicating how it's pronounced). But for a white British author, he does have an insightful way of communicating how Jamaicans reason and think.

BUT - I'm three quarters of the way through it now (it's not a big book), and I'm getting the feeling that Kennaway is mocking Jamaicans, and not in a sympathetic way. I won't say anymore in case you want to read it. I got it through my public library.

I've heard from a couple of sources now that "Guy Kennaway" is a penname for a woman - British or not I have no idea.

Does your book have the story set in Cousins Cove or a fictional town? My copy came to me in Jamaica (it was a gift) and has the stories set in Cousins Cove...I heard later that subsequent editions changed the name of the town because the folks in CC didn't like it?

The book I have shows a pic of a guy (Guy!)on the back flap. The location of the story is Angel Beach, in the fictional parish of St. John.

It sort of redeemed itself toward the end, in terms of making characters more sympathetic and less buffoonish or idiotic. I'm still a little teed off about it, but I would recommend it as a good read.

Ok, the library still hasn't gotten this book in yet. They promised if not by next week Monday they will get it from another library. Not sure if anywone was planning on joining this discussion but I would like to move it out 2 weeks, say Monday, 3/24.
