<span style="font-weight: bold"> Confirmed : Effective Today JPS ...GCT ( RJR )...</span>
Effective Wednesday customers of the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) will start paying General Consumption Tax (GCT) on reconnection fees. The fee of $1,500, which is applied to accounts disconnected for non-payment, will now attract 10% GCT.This means that customers who are disconnected will now need to pay $1,650 for reconnection, in addition to the outstanding bill amount. This new measure is said to form part of a list of items associated with the service provided by JPS, on which the Government has now imposed GCT.A statement issued on Tuesday night by the power company said other items which will now attract GCT include: charges for returned cheques; the service installation cost for temporary supply; cable pole attachment fees; damaged meter costs; and the charges for additional service wire. However, when contacted on Tuesday night Minister of Finance Audley Shaw said he was not aware of the decision to apply GCT on JPS reconnection fees. He said he would look into the matter on Wednesday.
