One of the island's leading trade unions is warning the Government to carefully consider the implications of the tax measure including the possibility that hundreds of persons could lose their jobs. The National Workers Union, which represents some categories of employees at Wray and Nephew, says the tax on alcoholic products will place added pressure on rum manufacturers forcing them to among other things cut their work force.NWU Vice President, Granville Valentine, blasted the Finance Ministry for its treatment of the sector."Where you find that these taxes are being imposed without justification and the workers are going to suffer the consequences at the end of the day,""You must also look at who owns these companies, many times its expatriates and they will be frustrated over time if we continue to put in these unreasonable policies, not just taxes but other policies that are quite unreasonable, and eventually they will pack up their things and go," Mr. Valentine said.
