Shahine Robinson, former Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Member of Parliament (MP) for North East St Ann, has been hit with a $22 million legal bill by attorneys representing Manley Bowen, the man who successfully petitioned the High Court to oust her from the House of Representatives. The massive bill was submitted to Mrs Robinson last month after she conceded that she was a US citizen at the time of her nomination for the 2007 General Election. On Thursday, the attorneys for both sides appeared in the Supreme Court to argue over the bill during a taxation hearing before the Registrar.Mr. Bowen's attorneys submitted documents showing the Registrar how they arrived at the $22 million figure. In October, the attorneys had pressed for indemnity cost, a severe form of cost, claiming Mrs. Robinson knew that she was an American, but decided to fight the election petition filed against her. Supreme Court judge, Roy Jones, who heard the matter, had awarded cost to Mr. Bowen and his legal team.Thursday's hearing is another in the ongoing legal battles between Mrs. Robinson and Mr. Bowen, a former North East St. Ann MP.Mrs. Robinson was ousted from the seat in October due to her dual citizenship status. She has since renounced her US citizenship and was nominated last week to represent the JLP in the by-election scheduled for December 20.The Opposition People's National Party says it will not be participating in the election.Mrs. Robinson will be going up against St. Ann journalist and Garveyite Devon Evans who is running on the Marcus Garvey People's Political Party ticket.
