Scores of civil servants have been left fuming this Christmas, after the Finance Ministry pulled the plug on planned Christmas parties and other festivities. In a circular, a copy of which was obtained by RJR News, the Ministry directed that no public funds should be used for Christmas Party activities. The two-paragraph circular, dated December 3, under the signature of Financial Secretary, Dr. Wesley Hughes, added that staff can go ahead with their Christmas soirees using their own funds, if they so desire. The statement also urged Permanent Secretaries and other Agency heads to ensure that the directive is circulated to all concerned Government workers. Civil servants upset However, the directive has not gone down well with some civil servants.It's understood that organisers of Christmas parties within various Ministries and other Government agencies are now scrambling to cancel bookings at some of the leading hotels in Kingston. RJR News has learnt that some employees of the Bank of Jamaica were left in an embarrassing position when, at the last minute, Friday's Christmas party had to be cancelled. It's understood that the caterers and sound system operators who had been booked for the function are demanding payment. However the BOJ employees say they have no money to make the payment. Efforts to reach Dr. Wesley Hughes were unsuccessful. (RJR News)
