A planned strike by more than 400 ancillary workers employed to Lamasa Janitorial Limited over the non-payment of their fortnightly wages has been called off.The workers, who are assigned to the Kingston Public and Victoria Jubilee Hospitals as well as the Bustamante Hospital for Children, had planned to remain off the job over the non-payment of their fortnightly wages, uniform allowance and lunch subsidy. The strike, which started Friday afternoon, saw the workers putting down their tools shortly after four o'clock after they were advised that the promised money was not paid as agreed. However, an emergency meeting between the National Workers Union (NWU), which represents the workers, and Tanny Shirley, Chairman of the South East Regional Health Authority, Friday night, halted the strike action.Brian Martin, Chief Union Delegate in the NWU, says a meeting has been scheduled for Monday at 8:30 a.m. at which time the matter is expected to be resolved."Mr. Shirley has reassured us that come Monday morning, all these issues will be resolved, so we've advised the workers to resume working with immediate effect until Monday's meeting. He said the manager of Lamasa must be at that meeting on Monday," Mr. Martin told RJR News. The workers have been at odds with the management of Lamasa Janitorial Limited since 2008.
