The Opposition, People's National Party (PNP) has put its political machinery in high gear in anticipation of local government elections next year. The elections, which were constitutionally due by the end of June this year, were postponed by parliament. It is to be held no later than March 30 of next year. Following a meeting with councillors and candidates at the Jamaica Conference Centre in Kingston yesterday, PNP Deputy General Secretary, Julian Robinson, says the party will not be caught off-guard. The party won only two of the 13 parish councils in the last local government elections in 2007, which were swept by the governing Jamaica Labour Party. Robinson said the PNP is optimistic about its chances at the polls, and is prepared to drive local government reform.
