Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) officials have sought to put to rest talk that Shahine Robinson is not qualified to contest the December 20 by election in North East St. Ann. The matter was raised last week by the Peoples Progressive Party (PPP), which has announced it will be fielding a candidate in the election. The JLP took on the issue during a press conference on Monday morning.Last week PPP president Miguel Lorne insisted that Mrs. Robinson had still not been duly nominated as she needed to re-apply for Jamaican citizenship.Mrs. Robinson, the former MP, was ousted from Gordon House after the courts ruled that she was not qualified to sit because she had obtained US citizenship. But despite insisting that she had renounced her American citizenship, until Monday the party had not presented any proof. On Monday morning, the JLP brought a flurry of documents to the press conference in a bid to dismiss detractors."We have obtained from the US Department of State Bureau of Consular Affairs Statement of Understanding concerning the consequences and ramifications of relinquishment and renunciation of US citizenship signed by Shahine,""We have a signed copy of her oath or renunciation of the nationality of the United States and we also have the certificate of loss of nationality of the United States," Mr. Franklin said. And the Party has announced its road campaign in the run up to the by election. "We have structured the constituency walks as well as three major meetings that will be held Thursday in Exchange, Steer Town on Friday and Saturday, St. Ann's Bay," he said. With the People's National Party not contesting the polls, Mrs. Robinson will face off against the PPP's Devon Evans in the December 20 polls.
