SEVERAL of the country's athletes who competed at the last World Junior Track and Field Championships in Canada were on show on Saturday at G.C. Foster College, representing their schools at the Tyser Mills Classics where some 26 records were broken. The meet had several of the leading high-school teams giving early indicators that come next year an exciting season should be expected. Although the likes of athletes from Holmwood Technical, Edwin Allen, Wolmer's Boys and Kingston College were absent, those from Vere Technical, St Jago High, St Elizabeth High, Hydel and hosts St Catherine High gave a good account of themselves.On the track, it was the Vere Technical duo of Shericka Jackson and Deandra Whitehorne that led the pack with good performances in the 300 metres.Jackson, who had a very long season the past year where she represented the country at the Carifta, CAC, World Junior and World Youth Olympics, was a cut above other athletes in Class II, where she took the event in a new record of 41.1 seconds.Her teammate Deandra Whitehorne, who ran on the fourth place 4x100 metres relay team at the World Juniors, was the top Class I athlete in the event, where she stopped the clock at 40.09 seconds in the 300 metres. The time was the fastest time on the day over the event by any female athlete.St Catherine High School's Aneika Brissett gave early signs that she will be a danger in Class III, in the upcoming season's sprints, as the Millard Dunbar-coached athlete had two impressive wins. Brissett clocked a superb 18.7 seconds in the 150 metres, before returning for another fine win in the 300 metres, in 41.5 seconds.World Junior representative Travis Smikle of Calabar continued where he left off last season as the World Junior finalist in the discus made it a clean sweep for his school in the Class I event, winning easily with 59.27 metres. Smikle's teammates Oshane Charles (46.68) and Fredrick Dacres (46.14) finished second and third, respectively. It was also a clean sweep for Calabar in the shot put event as Ashinia Miller won with 17.75 metres to get the better of Dacres (16.12) and Smikle (15.67) metres.It was a welcome return on the track for the outstanding Bridgeport High school sprinter Jahzeel Murphy. Plagued by injuries the past season, which derailed him after the Boys and Girls' Championships, competing in his first event since Champs, Murphy breezed to a quick 16.6 seconds in the Boy's Class 1 150 metres.
