The Office of the Contractor General (OCG) has given the Jamaican Government until December 29 to provide it with information on the reported planned sale of the Sandals Whitehouse Hotel in Westmoreland. Today, the OCG wrote to the Government to query if there was any truth to the report. The latest edition of the Sunday Herald reported that talks are under way for the property to be sold to the Gordon 'Butch' Stewart led Sandals Group, which now operates the hotel. The Sunday Herald article quoted businessman R. Danny Williams as stating that he was asked by the parties to act as facilitator for the sale of the property. Williams was also quoted as saying the parties have been talking since June but that nothing has been finalised. The OCG says that if the reports of the private talks are true, it wants a broad range of information and documentation regarding the proposed divestment. The OCG notes that in January it wrote to Cabinet Secretary, Ambassador Douglas Saunders, seeking a comprehensive list of all Government assets that were slated for divestment for the 2010-2011 financial year. The OCG says that in response, On February 15 Ambassador Saunders provided the OCG with a listing of more than 80 Government owned assets which were earmarked for divestment. But the OCG says there was no mention of the Government's interest to divest the Sandals Whitehouse Hotel in that response nor any subsequent update to the listing provided by the Cabinet Office. The OCG says it is requesting the information on the planned divestment from Ambassador Saunders to facilitate its monitoring of the process in keeping with its statutory mandate
