The Ministry of Commerce is to investigate a report that scrap metal thieves continue to wreak havoc in parts of the island.Last week Mayor of Spanish Town, Dr. Andrew Wheatley, disclosed that persons were still removing items from sections of the old capital as well as other parts of the parish.He urged the Government to permanently shut down the scrap metal industry.When contacted Commerce Minister Karl Samuda said he had not been informed that scrap metal thieves were again on the rampage but promised to look into the matter."From time to time you get reports but I haven't had any recent reports outlining any theft but that is not to say that it might not have occurred, I just haven't had that report so I will investigate the matter and see what can be done to address it," Mr. Samuda said. The Minister last year threatened to shutdown the sector due to the high rate of scrap metal theft.
