Finance Minister, Audley Shaw, has confirmed that the government will make good on its promise to pay retroactive salaries to public sector teachers this month. However, he has not given an exact date for the payment. The Jamaica Teachers' Association (JTA) had expressed concern that the money would not be paid as the association had not receive word on a payment date. The Industrial Disputes Tribunal (IDT) had ruled in October that the government should pay $500 million of the $8 billion owed to public sector teachers by November. The IDT said the remaining $7.5 billion are to be paid in three equal instalments over the next three financial years. However, the government failed to meet the November 25 payment date.
