Christmas in the City ... Downtown Comes Alive has been declared a huge success by beaming store managers in down-town Kingston, who welcomed thousands of shoppers throughout yesterday's activities."It's just a brilliant idea!" said Mark Azan, proprietor of Azan's Princess Street."Just look in the store. I did a lot more business than last year. In fact, I'm going to start raising noise from early if this is not an annual thing."The throngs who flocked downtown all day long yesterday created a steady flow of heavy traffic throughout the capital city from 9 a.m. and into last night.Indeed, the wonderfully cool Christmas weather provided the perfect atmosphere for the second annual Christmas in the City.Music, entertainment, a jonkanoo parade, and the opening of the new Sweet Tings bakery were just the icing on the cake of a great day of shopping and fantastic bargains.Doing some of his Christmas shopping inside Ammar's, Prime Minister Bruce Golding joked: "If I can get some of the same great bargains I got today, I will be coming back tomorrow."Shoppers were able to take advantage of the 20 to 70 per cent discounts on offer during the event, which was sponsored by The Gleaner Company.No incidents of crimeTown Clerk Errol Greene was quite pleased with the successful day. In every store he visited, owners gave him the thumbs up on a great job, while vendors congratulated him on bringing them increased sales in a slow economy. Francis Kennedy, Jamaica Chamber of Commerce vice-president, also got great reports from the merchants, while the police had no reports of incidents."We're having fun," said a member of a group of women carrying several shopping bags. "We got a lot of things today, which made our Christmas shopping easier.""Next week we can just buy food," another of the women said with a laugh."My house a go well fix up this weekend," said another.To cap it all off, Beenie Man and a host of artistes entertained the thousands as the curtains came down on another successful Christmas in the City.
