Some of the latest secret diplomatic cables published by Wikileaks reveal that US diplomats thought the Cuban leader Fidel Castro came close to death in 2006. Un-named sources told US diplomats in Havana that Mr Castro had almost died after suffering a perforated intestine during an internal flight.The illness led Mr Castro to hand power to his brother Raul, though he has since returned to public life.Mr Castro has praised Wikileaks for - as he put it - bringing the US morally to its knees.Earlier this week, another US diplomatic cable said Cuban officials painted Jamaica as chronically uncooperative in stopping drug smugglers who use Cuba to transport drugs destined for the US.
