Dec. 29--GEORGETOWN, Guyana -- Three people charged with treason in Guyana -- Bruce Munroe, a major in the Guyana Defence Force (GDF); his wife, Carol Ann Munroe; and Leonard "Junior" Wharton, a former GDF officer -- were refused bail by Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry at the City Magistrate's Court on Tuesday morning and were remanded to prison until January 7, the day they are scheduled to re-appear in Court. The State is alleging that the trio plotted to wage war within Guyana to force the president out of office in order to compel the government to change its policy.Defence counsel Reginald Gaskin told the magistrate that the charge was baseless and cannot be sustained based on the evidence, while lead defence counsel, Nigel Hughes, appealed for special provisions to be made for Mrs Munroe, a teacher, to be detained under special conditions because she is schizophrenic. The prosecutor told the court that he has four witnesses and several exhibits, which include audio-visual recordings and transcripts of conversations that were repeatedly held at Wharton's Chatel Hotel, in Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara.Wharton's wife, Fay, manager of the Guyana Telephone and Telegraphic Company, who was arrested with the trio, was released without any charge being laid against her
